    Hi all,

I get VERY strange performance when playing Bioshock:

For the first 5-10 minutes, it runs well - framerates are perfectly acceptable.

After 10 or so minutes, the framerate drops to an unplayable level of about 15 when nothing is going on and less than 10 as soon as anything starts happening.

The only thing I can think of is that the temperatures reach a point when:

    a) the CPU is throttled
    b) things start going wrong?!

However, when checking the CPU temperature, it never seems to go past 93'C. This suggests that it is the 8600M GT which is overheating and things are going wrong or it is throttled or whatever

Note - this happens REGARDLESS of the graphics settings - the performance will always degrade after a certain time period.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions? Can I raise the throttle temp of the 8600M GT? Or perhaps lower the voltage?

    Hmm.

    Very annoying.

Or. Maybe. It is something completely different?!

    I am runnign WinXP Pro SP2, T7300, 2GB 800 RAM, 8600M GT.

What program are you using to measure the temps?

Does the problem only occur in Bioshock?

Have a read of this thread.
I would suggest (i) that you reset your BIOS (F2 to enter BIOS at Zepto splashscreen, F9 to reset to defaults and F10 to save); then look into undervolting the CPU.

The problem seems to occur only in Bioshock but I have only played older games which may not stress the system so much such as HL2 and SystemShock2.

I am using Everest to measure the temps.

    Max CPU temp - 92'C
    Max GPU temp - 93'C

These are high, but not dangerous right?!

Can't quite work this out, because the BIOS is the newest one (circumventing the problem that John Ratsey mentioned I think?).

And besides, the throttling shouldn't be a problem because my throttle CPU temperature threshold is set to 97'C in the BIOS... unless Everest detects it wrongly, but none of the 5 temps it detects reaches 97'C.

    HOLY COW!

    GPU temp is ok

BUTBUTBUT CPU temp IS NOT 92C!?!? That crazy did it not shut down automatically?

I would be uncomfortable with having those temperatures for sustained periods.

There is a DTS (=Digital Temperature Sensor) menu in the BIOS, but I don't know how it works. The BIOS temperature bug should have been fixed in -005, but the test would be to look at your CPU temperature under light load. If it is around 65C with the fan cutting in and out then it's OK, but if it is over 70C and the fan running continuously then maybe the temperature bug has resurfaced.

I have 3 temps as reported in RMClock and Everest:

"CPU" - Idle is about 55'C
    Core1 - Idle is about 77
    Core2 - Idle is about 78

Which one is the true value I should take notice of? I guess it is the Cores, which indicate that something is wrong...

I am going to have a go with RMClock... not sure exactly what I have to change - I have FID: 6.0x, 7.0x, 8.0x, 9.0x and 10.0x, each with a voltage - should I change them all to 1.1v or just some of them?

    Thanks

haha mine is 96C constantly when I am stressing the cpu with Everest. My highest temp till now that I have seen is 98c(on one of the two cores) not a big difference though. But my notebook has never shutdown because of the high temps so I think it really needs to be 100C or over.

But what if the gpu gets to 110c is that oke too? And also will this shorten the lifespan of my notebook? I play games everyday for a couple of hours so I think my gpu will get to 110c overtime, or maybe not :p.

    Thank you.

I suggest you purchase a cooling pad! also check out this guide!

Wow, thanks John, the BIOS reset trick seemed to drop the CORE temps down to 51 and 54 C.

    Thats a whopping 27'C !!!!?!?!!?!?!?!?

    insane

And they max out at 81'C each rather than 92'C!!!

Good news to hear that you aren't so close to melt-down.

So are you saying that even the latest available BIOS (-005) can get it's lines crossed on the temperature monitoring?

John - it looks as though I was mistaken - I only had -004 BIOS. I just updated to -005.

OK. -005 isn't meant to have this bug but they took out the lowest fan setting so your fan is off until about 63C and then comes on at medium speed. I didn't like the extra noise so I went back to -004 but have to reset the BIOS every few days.

My CPU has been at 51'C all day and the fan is always on medium or low (not sure, but definitely not high).
