My Dvd drive has stopped reading dvd's.. and when I try to burn something I get to 100% but it has problems after 100% and it constantly fails, even though the data on the disk is readable after burning. What to do? I figure that my warranty just expired a week or so ago.

    thanx

Well contact Zepto about it, if your lucky youll get the repair for free, or have to pay less than you should :p

Or buy a new DVD-drive, I recon they dont cost that much

Bad timing! All I can suggest is to carefully try to blow all the dust out and clean the lens. The read and write lasers are, I believe, separate, so one could work when the other has problems.

Otherwise it's time to look for a slim ATA optical drive. They are a standard component.

Almost. You need a 12.7mm (1/2") thick IDE / ATA notebook optical drive. Some of these, for example (but avoid the ones with SATA interface). I recall Zepto had some problems with the operating system losing the Sony drives so it may be prudent to avoid them. Some more here.

As your drive is currently not working it won't hurt to try to flash the firmware. Zepto have supplied updated firmware for their CD/DVD drives here ftp://ftp.zepto.dk/Optical_Drives/Firmware/ I've flashed mine and I have a much higher burn success rate. Just make sure you choose the firmware for the correct drive.

Got my Dvd-drive today.. the exaxt same model as before, samsung... But the opening is to small, the tray stuck, so I had to shave off the top of the plastic front. Even though I tried using the old and even that one was too big for some reason, even though it worked fine before..

Unclip the old front and swap it over.

See this thread for an example of what the clips look like.

Hey again.. the dvd-drive is acting up again. Now for some reason it can only read certain types of dvd-r or dvd+r. Ive tried with 3 different brands: Verbatim, TDK and SAmsung Pleomax. And TDK is the only one that is working. The problem is, I am trying to burn a ps2 game with it, and the ps2 does not read the burnt TDK dvd. Does anyone have any clue?

A small hint (no offence ment), i wouldn't test my burnt DVD's with a Playstation.. :) Burn a movie or some audio cd for testing.

Well, that was not really the point. The point was that it can only read certain medias. And I have since realised that it doesnt actually burn anything on the TDK media, even though it is burnt to completion the disk is empty.

Could be that the burner is not compatible with the dye used in the TDK discs.

Use DVD Identifier to read the media code of the disc. The brand is no indication of the dye type. Then you could also the Samsung optical drive support people if that media is supported.

Well I dont think the dye is the problem.. I have contacted samsung about the drive. Just find it odd that the same machine has now broken two optical drives within 1½ years since purchase. I regret the buy so much. I am not buying zepto again...

Optical drive quality can be very different. I've had 3 different model LG drives die on me in my stationary within 1 year. Haven't had a single problem with my External Samsung drive yet which is used with my Notus A12. It eats everything i throw at it. Personally i wouldn't hold back buying Zepto again just because of the optical drive failing. This could happen in any laptop or desktop PC no matter what brand as there are not so many different manufacturers of optical drives out there.

I have a similar problem with my 6625WD. It started by not reading CDs and now DVDs are becoming iffy. Coupled with the left mouse button losing its snap, I am really unimpressed with the build quality of this machine.

Are the instructions anywhere of how to remove DVDs and generally dismantle the case? I can't afford the stupidly long wait that Zepto have for fixing things. I have to say I regret buying this computer! For something that is seriously expensive, the quality is severely lacking.

Removing one screw on the bottom (close by the back edge of the burner and with a square symbol) is enough to release the optical drive on the 6024W. I expect the 6625WD to be similar. After removing the screw the whole unit pulls out. Then transfer the fixing bracket to the new drive and slot it in and refit the fixing screw.

However, first carefully clean the lens on your existing drive (if it is a tray loader). The 6625WD will tend to such in a lot of cooling air and this may have introduced some dust. I wouldn't blame Zepto if the optical drive has got tired - they are probably the least durable component of modern notebooks.

Had the same issues as the OP is reffering to, tried flashing firmware, and now the DVD-drive isn't responding at all. Can't even eject the drive, System recovery didn't fix anything.

Needless to say, i'm new here, and i don't know a whole lot about computers, that's why answers would be very much appreciated.

What should i do now? any solutions? i was thinking about reformatting the whole computer, i've wanted to do that for some time for various reasons anyway, but how to do that without a working CD/DVD-drive?

Browsing through unit management (directly translated, can't remember the real translation), it appears that the names of the drives are:

    IL3145E KLR844P SCSI CdRom Device
    TSSTcorp CDDVDW SN-S082H ATA Device

    If that's of any importancy.

It appears that you had a problem when flashing the new firmware. If the eject button doesn't work then it's probably past fixing.

The burner is a standard 12.7mm thick slimline optical drive with PATA interface (the newest drives have SATA). Any optical drive meeting those same specs should work and can be fitted in very few minutes as explained in my previous post.

Thanks, John, there does seem to be a screw with what looks like a CD symbol by it. Do you have any tips on how to clean the lens? I am assuming the lens is in the slot with a mechanism that you can move to and from the centre of the tray?

Yes, that;'s the lens. Wipe carefully with a cotton bud to remove any dust.

Yes, it means you have to buy a new drive.
