It was all going swimmingly. I've had my 6615 for 1 month (1.83ghz core 2 duo; 160GB 5200 HD; 2gig memory), and it was working very well indeed: fast, stable, etc.

However, after a questionable installation of drivers and software for my Creative Zen Touch MP3 player (it crashed during installation), the machine has developed a habit of repeatedly and seemingly randomly crashing to a BSOD. The most common of which is the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, although it is not limited to that. I immediately uninstalled the Creative drivers, thinking it was a driver problem, however, the BSODs continued. I also encountered one case of windows refusing to boot, telling me that C:\WINDOWS\System.ini was 'file missing or file error' and I had to use Windows CD to do a repair, which got it running again, but the crashes continued.

They don't seem to be triggered by anything specific. I've encountered them while running firefox, doing a defrag, launching a game, and occassionally just when sitting idle. I rarely get more than 10 mins use out of the machine before they happen.

I also find that the pc refuses to power-up immediately after crashing. I have to leave it for upwards of 20 mins before it will boot again.

I have done a system restore to 7 days before the incident with the Creative Zen installation, but that hasn't helped at all. I have also disabled quick-boot in the bios to no avail.

I thought it might be a hard drive error, and have run chkdsk, which came up with no errors. I also downloaded the hard disk checker from the zepto site and run that. The quick-check came up with no errors, but the extended test crashed it.

I am going to format the hard drive and reinstall windows tonight as last resort.

    Any input gladly received.

OK cool. I'll give that a shot.

According to the change log. It disables the IR-receiver.

Nah. I quite enjoy it. Theraputic. :)

I'm just worried it's a serious hardware issue, I don't understand why it would refuse to boot up immedaitely after crashing. Seems serious to me. Although this is my first notebook.

    Not looking good.

I flashed the bios with the new version (1.08r). The process went ok and reached completion, but would not reboot. It just hung. I powered off/on, but it would not boot, the screen stayed black, and I got 4 speaker beeps.

Now each time I power on, it's usually just sitting there with a black screen. It's as if it's booting, but the screen is broken. But that can;t be the case, as sometimes the screen will come on and get to the end of the bios checks, but the boot halts there.

I'm not even trying to get into windows, just boot onto my XP disc so I can do a re-install. But I can't even get that far. :(

I'm sorry to hear that, but if you can enter to the BIOS menu and change what you need to change, coz it's in default settings now.
