Hi,
Last week I started a thread regarding the high temp I experienced (97C) when testing in 3DMark06- only ran the video part (2.0/3.0) in 3 loops (app. 19 mins testing) for intensive graphic testing as the CPU test allows the GPU to cool down. Since then have read a lot of different threads regarding undervolt/overclocking, both on this site and other sites.
With this thread want to share my experience and hopefully some other Noob, like myself, will find it usefull.
Found out that no 2 PCs are alike- be it the CPU or the GPU. Some people get great undervolt/overclock, others are less fortunate.
Started by undervolting the CPU:
Required programs RMClock 2.35 & Orthos.
Had big problems getting RMClock 2.35 to run under Vista x64, mainly due to the Signature requirements by Vista. Found following thread on how to install RMClock:
http://www.overclock.net/operating-systems/246265-vista-x64-coretemp-tweak.html
The thread also contains a zip file where Atsiv.exe is located.
This completed I followed the instructions in following very good thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=124420
Jump to page 16 -halfway down- of the thread for instructions to undervolt.
Now have a very quiet PC that never goes higher than 77C- this after 2 hrs testing with Orthos.
Overclocking the GPU:
Required programs: Riva Turner 2.06 & 3DMark06
As I had experienced the high temp in my orginal configuration I though I had hit paydirt when I came across following thread, which "changes" your 8600m GT card to a 8600 GTS card (used in desktops):
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=240053
The actual instructions of how-to-do is halfway down page 1.
Thought this was the easy way out- no need to overclock the GPU, get the graphic card to think it is a better card and always able to upgrade drivers with original Forceware drivers from Nvidia.
As everybody knows nothing is free in this lifeso after following the instructions observed following:
I only gained app. 50 pts when testing in 3DMark06- presume this guy tested in 1280x1024- it doesnt say??
Others gained more which just confirms PCs are different.
At some point I restarted my PC and when Vista had finished loading, the Activation screen popped up!!!! Tried re-activating using my Vista key, however, Vista claimed it was already in use. After several calls to M$ Denmark- did you know that when you choose the activation menu on the phone you have to let the automated voice repeat itself twice before you are transfered to a human voice/ assistance!- I explained to the tech-guy my problem and that I only had "upgraded" my graphic card with software. He said yes but Vista had "scored" this upgrade very high and thus Vista thought it was a new PC. After a short hefty discussion- I mean, what business is it of M$s if I change my graphic card. I could understand it if it was my CPU I changed- the tech gave me a activation code.
Not being satisfied with the initial results of the "new" card I started overclocking.
Used following very good thread to set up Riva Turner:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=81852
and managed to overclock to core/mem 550/475 stable, giving 3774 in ordinary Dmark06 test in 1280x1024.
Still not being satisfied I decided to rebuild my PC and use the modded driver 169.09. Am now able to overclock to core/mem 650/475 stable, giving 3941 in ordinary DMark06 test in 1280x1024.
Re above, I'm sticking with the modded drivers, although other people have benefitted from the "changed" card option.
Still being a noob have following questions:
1. Normally everybody tests 3DMark06 in 1280x1024 as this is default in the free program version, however, as the 6625WD is a 15"4 screen wouldnt a 1280x800, 1680x1050 or other 15"4 configurations give the most correct result?
2. As earlier mentioned I experienced 97C testing the GPU using the original setup from Zepto. The graphic driver was 101.something -cant remember precisely. After installing the modded driver 169.09 and overclocking the temp never goes higher than 95C (using the earlier mentioned 19 min test).
Is there really that big difference between drivers?
3. When overclocking the GPU one is to look for artifacts. Havent experienced that yet but have experienced that Vista reports the graphic driver stopped responding. Then after awhile Vista reports graphic driver is now working again and in the meantime the 3DMark06 tests run very slow.
Is this a Nvidia feature to protect the graphic card?

Guys,
Respect the opinions of others...I deleted some of the posts.
If you want to repost your posts, then go ahead but make sure they are more constructive then destructive. -

Baserk,
Ok maybe my approach to undervolting/overclocking isnt the correct/best way to go about it but I am quiet satisfied with my results and until my PC starts to misbehave or somebody else points out what I've done wrong I'll continue using them.
When I initially got interested in undervolting/overclocking I started searching for a thread that had it all- the how and the what to do- but didnt find one. Its most likely out there somewhere, however, I did find the linked threads which all explain clearly how and what to do- with pictures and all.
So with this thread I just wanted to tell other people about them and my experience using them - see no harm in that.
By the way, did you actually read these threads.....or are you the one who needs to do some more reading.
I'm guessing you havent, so kindly stop discouraging others from trying them out by being so negative.
As for the "nothing is free" phrase, maybe I should have written: there are no shortcuts or such like.
But fail to see what Linux has got to do with anything...
I can also get a bad cold for free and I definitely dont want either of them. -
Hey Norup58; I've also experimented with undervolting, and have lowered my temps. Here's a thread I started about CPU undervolting in 6625 and the results.
I managed to get the CPU working on really low V -
Hi n0elia,
Yeah good thread. It was actually your thread or more precisely 1 of Sprint's posts in your thread that got me started- he linked to the SBS guide for undervolting. -
Hi Baserk,
Ok, maybe I was a bit harsh in my reply to your 1st post - can understand from your 2nd post it was all meant in the best of intensions/ cautions about the perils of undervolting/ overclocking, so apparently I didnt catch the drift.
Re your remark about "smoke coming from the car hood": I have always been taught there are no stupid questions - only stupid answers.
Brgds
