Hey,
Just got my 6625wd today but I am having some problems with it.
I popped my dvd copy of windows vista ultimate and the laptop recognized it and started installing. After installing vista properly I popped the zepto driver dvd in the drive but nothing happend, the drive did make some noise but nothing in windows.
I went to My Computer but there there is no dvd drive icon or anything. Whats going on help!!! I had to install all the drivers through internet connection, even then the dvd drive is not recognized in windows yet it is when booting up the laptop since it says press any key to boot from cd or dvd.
-
can you download the drivers for the dvd-drive at zeptos ftp and install them?
ftp.zepto.dk -
I dont see any drivers for the drive on the ftp site. The rest of the drivers I installed from the site just fine but there isnt any dvd drive one.
Could zepto uk, or rene zepto send me the drivers or any help for the default dvd drive that is equiped, the samsun combo thing -

There are no special drivers for the optical drive.
The problem may be with the IDE interface. I would start by download and running the latest Intel INF update which will make sure that the Intel chipset drivers are up to date.
My next course of action would be to reset the IDE channel to which the optical drive should be connected. On my 6024W this is the second of the primary IDE channels (strange arrangement which I haven't seen before).
Another action which may flush out the problem is to physically remove the ODD. The ODD in my 6024W is (incorrectly) reported as a removeable device. Perhaps you have the same and unintentionally removed the device through the icon in the system tray.
John -
I am downloadin the inf update
as for the reset IDE channel how do i do that
and no the odd wasnt recognized as a removable device and I didnt remove it from the icon -
installed the inf update, says everything is uptodate. Still no luck with the dvd drive
I dont understand why it is recognized in the bios, in the boot menu and I can even boot from it but vista doesnt recognize it. when i pop it in whilst in vista the drive spins but then stops -

For some reason Vista has lost your optical drive. My next action would be:
Go into Device Manager and check (a) is the DVD/CD drive listed; and (b) Does the ATA/ATAPI controller options look like the attached?
You should find that one of the channels has a transfer mode UDMA-2. One channel will have UDMA-5 (this is the hard disk). Right click and uninstall all the channels except the one with the hard disk. The go to the top of the list in Device Manager, right click and select Scan for hardware changes. This should redetect and reinstall the IDE channels and any devices connected to them.
If this doen't fix it then we will have to think of something else. Start here. This looks like a common Vista problem.

This is what I get in device manager

OK. Device Manager is not showing the optical drive.
Can you look at the properties > Advanced settings of each IDE channel and uninstall all except the one with a transfer mode of Ultra DMA mode 5.
Then follow my previous instructions. The IDE channels should reappear and, I hope, the optical drive will appear as well.
John
PS: Are you able to downsize that graphic. Try this software.
John -
they reapear as they are in the picture above, but still no luck with the optical drive
do you think this is a problem with the laptop or vista, I will call zepto support now, do you have any other ideas?? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
1. Check and confirm that the BIOS recognises the optical drive. You may be able to see this on the initial start-up screen. If the BIOS doesn't report the optical drive, try resetting the BIOS to its default settings.
2. Try applying the Vista fix discussed here. There are also plenty of other Google hits for "Vista missing optical drive".
John -
tried all those fixes still no luck.
just installed xp and everything is working as it should now -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
If XP is fine then the problem clearly lies with Vista. Microsoft will probably try to assure us it is a feature not a bug.
John -
anywaythx for your help, will try vista again when service pack comes out
right now playing medal of honor airborne demo on full res and full graphics and its running great haha, will post some screens later on -
have you tested to remove the dvd drive and boot the computer up, shut it down, plug the dvd drive back in and boot, and see what happends. Im not 100% shure that theres no risk doing this, so plese do it on your own risk. But the drive should be hotpluggable so it shouldnt be a problem
just be careful when manovering the drive -
I just bought the laptop.....I dont want to ruin the warranty by doing that stuff sprint
but yea xp is working flawlessly and so is the dvd drive in xp, i guess its just a vista bug, Il wait till service pack 1 comes out, then install vista again and if it still doesnt work maybe the drive isnt vista ready or some thing like that so i might have to send the lappy back -
I got exactly the same problem, with the same laptop.
-
sammeke288, pm me your msn address so we can talk about this, I may have a fix but I dont have vista installed, if the fix works for you then il install vista again otherwise il stick to xp since it works fine in xp
-
Just got my 5526wd the other day which is great so far , apart from i cannot see the dvd drive in vista either very odd. I have looked at the registry fixes but still nothing

On my 6024W the optical drive shows up as a removable device. If it is the same on the 6625WD then this may be a factor. I've noticed that if I remove the optical drive and replace it then it is not detected.
Try going into Device Manager and then right clicking on the top item in the list (whatever you have named your computer) and selecting Search for new hardware. This fixed the missing ODD for me.
John -
tried that, even thought i might be able to add manually but need a driver for that. Very annoying

Is the optical drive reported on the BIOS boot-up screen?
I thik I've already posted this link, but here's another one. You might find something there.
John -
For those having vista drive problems in this thread, the drive is reported in the bios, and heck we installed vista using the dvd drive so it definately works.
Tried all the above registry fixes , even went far enough to get the registry key for the dvd drive off Sprint (thanks) whose 6625WD laptop with vista is working fine including the dvd drive. Applied his dvd drive registry file to my registry, still did not work
This is very annoying since I would like to run vista on my machine -

Just to update:
We recieved a machine today where the user reported that the Samsung DVD drive didn's show in Vista at all. They installed XP and it worked perfectly fine.... just as described in this topic.
I sat down and worked with the laptop. Firstly i put one of our standard Vista Business images on the laptop. DVD drive showed up just fine. Updated the install with all updates from Windows Update. DVD drive still worked perfectly fine and was shown in "Computer".
I then tried a full reinstall with one of the OEM Vista DVD's we sell with our machines. After the install i found the DVD drive to be working just fine. I then installed the Chipset driver. DVD drive worked fine. I then installed the VGA drivers. DVD drive still worked just fine. I then contined to install most of the drivers from the driver CD. DVD drive still worked fine. Updated with all updates from Windows Update. DVD drive still worked fine.... i only had one Unknown PCI device (turned out to be the CIR (Consumer Infrared Reciever)).
When i had installed the rest of the drivers everything was still working....
Long story short; I never found out why the user couldn't get the DVD drive to work. They wouldn't believe me, so i let the install i made be on the PC so they can se the drive works when they receive the machine back. -
For me dvd drive works in xp, just vista does not recognize it nor is it listed in device manager. I tried installing vista numerous times, same problem.
There are numerous pirated copies on the net, maybe the users have the pirated copies and they dont work like the product you have to buy. -

As i said the user that sent in this machine had their IT department install Vista on the machine and it did not have the drive listed in Computer or in device manager (it showed fine in XP according to the user), but it worked with the 2 different installs i did.
The Vista OEM install we have is a standard install DVD. No tricks or anyhting. Same OEM version you would be able to buy online from several resellers. -
Odd, I will try an install again in couple of days. May I ask you how did you perform the install, did you boot from the dvd or ran the dvd under xp? -
Rene S - Zepto Company Representative
We didn't try to install XP on the machine at all, only Vista.
Booted up on the Vista DVD. Removed partition. Formatted the partition and ran a default install. -
That is the way I tried my install of vista ultimate, will try it again and post results, could it be that the problem lies with ultimate and not other versions of vista?
The only difference in my installation this time will be that I am running on a different bios version then the stock one -
Rene S - Zepto Company Representative
I can try a Ultimate version om Monday if i get the time. Monday is the worst day on the phones though, so might not be able to try until Tuesday.
-
I will try to install vista ultimate once again, only difference being will be that I have a updated bios version, will post the results -
i am convined it is vista ultimate that is the problem, but short of buying vista home premium i can not test this theory

Does the optical drive show up as a removable device on the 6625WD?
It used to on my 6024W until the latest BIOS update so I think that some unmentioned change in the BIOS has now made the optical drive not removable. IMO that's an improvement because it is easy to accidentally remove it.
John -
Nope it doesnt, will try installing ultimate again tomorow with latest bios, hopefully it will work -
Well I have 6625WD and Vista Ultimate OEM from Zwpto and my DVD drive shows up fine, so I don't think it has anything to do with the Vista version.
-
This sucks, did a vista upgrade today with the newest bios still no dvd drive detected.
Did a complete wipe of xp and install vista again still dvd drive doesnt show up.
One thing though when vista is installed and I boot up the laptop there is some text that appears and disappears very quickly after the "Press Ctrl+S for Configuration" and before the Os starts to load. With xp there is none of that -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I presumed that the ODD worked fine during operating system installation, or did you install off copies installed on the hard disc?
Did you wipe your previous Vista installation or reinstall into the same place? In my experience reinstallation over an existing installation rarely fixes this type of problem.
John
PS: Have we visited Microsoft already? That refers to XP, but i wouldn't be surprised if Vista has a similar problem. -
Installed it off the dvd, tried a upgrade from xp to vista, didnt work.
Tried a fresh install, didnt work.
Done all those fixes, In the fix it mentions to delete lower and upper filters, the problem is that I dont have either. So i deleted the key to sey what happens, nothing happens the key reappears on reboot and dvd drive is still not working, im beggining to think the dvd drive is not vista compatible if there is such a thing -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Have you reset the BIOS recently? If not, do so. We need to exclude the BIOS configuration from the list of possible causes of this problem.
Vista should list 4 IDE channels. Look into the advanced settings. One of these will have the HDD on channel 0 (transfer mode Ultra DMA 5). Does any other channel have anything connected?
John -
Already put xp on, too pissed to try vista again. However there is no IDE thing with a ultra dma mode of 2. Yes I did reset the bios after vista install
there are two channel 0's
there are two channel 1's
one of the channel 0 is the hdd, the other I have no idea what it is but it has no ultra dma mode or anything, i delted it and device manager picked it up again and installed it.
channel 1's are ata storage controller and ata ultra controller or something of the sorts.
In other words its exactly the same as the screenshot I posted on page 1 of this thread -
http://www.randomfix.com/2007/04/12/windows-vista-%E2%80%93-missing-cddvd-rom-drive/
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Click on the start menu.
If this is a Vista machine in the search box type in “regedit” without the quotation marks.
Maximize the HKLM and then go ahead and browse until you reach the key listed above.
In the right panel you’ll see something along the lines of “UpperFilter” and “LowerFilter” you want to click on each “filter” key and hit delete. Click yes when it asks to confirm if you wish to delete the key.
Restart Windows.
Seems to work for some people.
Supposedly more commonly problem in 64bit Vista Ultimate.
Anybody notice some key presses not showing as registered characters after new BIOS for 6625WD? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I am starting to think that there could be an underlying problem somewhere between the BIOS and Vista such that Vista isn't seeing the ODD.
I wonder if there could be something in the ICH sub-menu in the BIOS which could be changed.
John -
Asked someone whose 6625WD is working with vista to export their registry key, then I imported their regisry key into mine and upon restart still no dvd drive showing.
I tried to remove an update from microsoft that suposable causes the dvd drive to go away and still no luck.
Tried booting into safemode, and here I see a bunch of lines of text like loading drivers and it just freezes, so safemode doesnt work at all. -
By chance did that person on the forum mention how he got to that option in the bios?? -
Thanks, Baserk.
Home premium has nothing to do with the options in the bios, I hope this ata thing is in the older bios's so that we can get our 6625WD's running vista properly
2nd ATA in the BIOS to "none"
Cant find this anywhere in the latest bios, people running the older bios's do you have this option or not?? -
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIX FOUND !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to Baserk's find and translation.
Fix is to go into the BIOS
Change 2nd IDE Channel device to NONE, instead of dvd drive or cd drive, or auto -
OK thanks to beserk and blackbrd , I have finally fixed this wooohooooo!!!!!!
Setting the scondary IDE channel to None has worked a treat. -
Maybe when Age of Conan is released, or when ever I want to see the power of dx10. -
go into the bios second tab along, hit return on the CD-rom and then use + and - to toggle the options.
