Chipset limited, actually. And probably motherboard limited as well.

how so? i'm somewhat computer literate but i don't know much about this. what could limit it? i could see something bigger than 8 being limiting, because of hardware/software, but what's the big deal about another 4 gigs?

Its the physical aspect of the motherboard that limits it.

More importantly price and availability of 4GB memory pieces prohibits it :)

I also wonder what type of laptop application would need that much memory.

i have no applicable use for it now. i'm sure some developers and programmers might have use for it. i was just curious if my laptop had the capability. and yes, donald. the price right now makes it prohibitive for most laptop users. crucial had it for a bit, but i checked about a week ago, and it wasn't available. i don't remember the price but i remember saying to myself, damn i could buy 2 or 3 of my laptop at that price.

Yeah, memory price is high, but I don't think you will need that much.
