EDIT 12-19-08 - all drivers final and 100% - Added How-to clean install ATI Drivers.
*** This will *not* work on any other system than the Mobility HD3870's - All other GPU support has been removed ***
This mod also unlocks the theatre options in CCC under AVIVO - I think..![]()
Ok, currently I am uploading the 64-bit and 32-bit .zip, for easy installation of these drivers. This is the full catalyst install package, so no other downloads will be necessary.
Ok guys..been working on this for the past 2 days, and I am dubbing this version E-wrecked Bored Mod w/DNA Performance Tweaks- I haven't had an opportunity to test performance wise against my first mod. The only thing I have noticed, and possibly it's because I need to reboot is that when I ran 3dMark Vantage, the Graphics Testing didn't display the FPS/Frames/Time in the lower status bar(issue now resolved). Aside from that, I haven't had any issues with testing. However, this .inf will give you all display resolutions you'll need, and it will also fit them fullscreen mode without any hassles/black borders. So, for those of you who want to game @ less than 1920.1200 and more than 1280.1024 - These are for you. The installation process is a bit unorthodox, but not complicated. Here's the deal:
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME INSTALLING THIS UNLESS YOU'RE DOING A CLEAN INSTALL - REMOVE ALL REMAINS OF YOUR CURRENT ATI DRIVER/SOFTWARE - Here's a simple method to clean install ATI Drivers.
Simple procedure. Check it out.
1) Open Device Manager and Remove Old Drivers, do not use device manager to also "Remove Driver Related Software"
2) Open Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel and remove the ATI Technologies Software Suite
3) Reboot, and tap F8 like nutzo on boot to enable Safe Mode option
4) From Safe Mode admin account, check to see VGA Graphics adapter properly installed.. if so see step 5. If not, repeat step 1.
5) Run Driver Sweeper and check the ATI Display box, then Analyze & Clean..I usually do it a 2nd time just cause. There should only be one entry after you run it the 2nd time, and it's a registry entry. Ignore that.
6) Reboot - Check to see that Standard VGA Appears in Device Manager - It's ok if Vista reports they're not functioning properly. If VGA appears, move to step 7 and if not, move to step 3.
7) Now, unzip the file package you downloaded.. run setup.exe under the main Driver Folder and install as "Custom" making sure the CCC is set to install, and also the Video Driver is recognized and will install. I disabled WoW and Cat Registration on my install..no need for the bloatware.
8) Should install clean, and smoothe..and when finished prompt you to reboot. *ta duh*
Hopefully this clears up most of the part where I stress a clean install.
Side note; Download DriverSweeper Here
There are 2 installation methods.. this first one is a "Do It Yourself" type of install where you get to feel good that you can follow the instructions below.
Download ATI's 8.12 Catalyst Install Package for 32-bit/64-bit Vista HERE
Download Mobility Mod Tool HERE
Download E-wrecked's Bored Mod 64-bit Vista .inf HERE
EDIT: Added .inf Mod for 32-Bit Vista HERE
To install 32-bit, follow the same guidelines here and then just drop this .inf in place of the mobility modded .inf - still need a clean install, and do not install the mobility modded driver without using this .inf
Ok, and here's the easy part.. Run the installer for the 8.12 Setup, and extract the files to a destination of your choice. When it asks you if you'd like to continue the install then cancel the installation. (typical mob mod method)
Now, following the Mob Mod method, using the Mod tool modify the 8.12 Directory. (if you're unsure of how to do so then read the directions on their download page)
DO NOT INSTALL THE MOB MODDED PACKAGE
Now that you've modded the install package, you'll need to copy the .inf I've modded. Copy the my modded .inf into the < ATI install directory>\support\8-12_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_72276\driver\packages\drivers\display\LH6A_INF\ location. There should already be a copy inside the directory named CH_7226.inf, Vista will prompt you to keep or replace.. You're replacing the file already there. If it makes it any easier, delete the old .inf and move the newly downloaded .inf into its' place.
Now, if you would be so kind as to change to the < ATI install directory>\support\8-12_vista64_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_72276\driver\ directory you'll see a Setup.exe icon. Double click and begin the installation. I suggest strongly the custom install method, so you can uncheck the "World of Warcraft" and "Catalyst Registration" - you likely don't need them installed. Everything else should go as normal, you'll have to tell Vista to "Install Driver Anyhow" when it prompts you that it is an unsigned driver.. And then reboot after your install. *ta duh*
Now you have all resolutions that fit to screen, and you also have your CrossfireX controls when right clicking the CCC Icon on your taskbar, and you have an added tweak or two that I think should make you happy.![]()
Installation Method 2(Easy install):
This is for the folks who wanna let the .zip file do all the work. VERY simple. You will still need to do this as a clean driver install, and I cannot stress this enough. If you're not doing a clean install of these drivers, then you may have problems such as BSODs or lack of resolutions, or horrid performance. Only install if device manager reports "Standard VGA Display Adapter" as your currently install Display Adapter. Now you can download, and the readme.txt inside the download will give you instructions for install. Basically, extract the file contents and run setup.exe - Simple eh?

These should perform exactly the same, if not better, than the 8.12 Final Cat Install Package.. as they didn't have tweaks added. These performance tweaks are compliments of the DNA Performance package and KillerSneak - check out his ATI Catalyst Mods/Drivers @ http://www.donotargue.com - Resolutions fitting to screen are compliments of myself. And, this has been a tedious experience so I hope you all benefit from it.
Feedback is welcome, enjoy!

Nice guide! will do when my m17 arrives this friday!
Is there any performance differences between this and the 8.12 beta? -
not sure just yet.. im just now getting to run some benches. been working on the mod all day.
-
Hey E-wrecked, it works !! great modded inf.
good job -
it works, but in ccc catalyst version still my old stuff : DNA ati vista 8.11 x64 how come doesnt show the new stuff i just install 8.12
-
did you do a clean install? you gotta remove all the old drivers/software first. then use safe mode, driver sweeper to clean all ati display driver.. then you run the setup. I guess you were in too much of a hurry.
..or maybe not, lemme check something.
EDIT: no..you should be cool -

-
slide that qx to jax.. I'll put it to use.

Here you go E-wrecked I told Mark about your modded drivers and he fixed them for you. You can send him a thank you card.
;Added by E-wrecked <--- Because I am so proud of myself yet DO NOT know what I am doing.
"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870" = ati2mtag_M88, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9508&SUBSYS_0770152D <--- Orphaned card. Anyone with this revision card will NOT be able to initialize Crossfire because a driver for one of the cards will NOT be installed.

"ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870" = ati2mtag_M88, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9508&SUBSYS_207A161F <-- Unnecessary duplicate code, it is allready defined above.
There is actually a third revision of these cards from the date of release not even mentioned here!
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9509&SUBSYS_02401043
PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9508&SUBSYS_02401043
There's the problem with relying on someone that is clearly an egomaniac, yet whose experience relies on one revision of one product.
Killer Notebooks never had a scaling problem because we do not release junk drivers and hacked up garbage like this -
I appreciate the help. However, these card revisions are based strictly off of what OCZ supports on their website. Take that up with them. I'm not a programmer, just someone making sure no one else has the same issues the previous mob-mod drivers have. And, he can send me a Thank You card when he steals the rest of the .inf, which is much more beneficial than the revisions posted.
-
Ummm, well I guess I will call him and ask him if he want to downgrade his video drivers to yours.
-
Ok, I installed the drivers using E-wrecked's method and the scaling issue is fixed
I'm going to test gTA IV to see if they're any improvements over the beta. I'd +rep you, but it says that I need to spread it around. I'll look for deserving folk later :/
-
-
What is this scaling issue everyone keeps talking about I have not experienced it since I have owned my nagamaki so I cant make an argument for something that has never been messed up for me.
-
Well.. seems like if I can resolve it, it's one less reason for anyone to waste money on drivers.
-
Ok, no noticeable improvements with the final version, though I did 30.03 fps without a CPU OC. It's now up to the upcoming GTA patch to fix the major issues.
-
E's technique is too long for installing.. E can you hook me up with a double click file that might just install everything for me? Since I don't know much I don't want to kill my notebook by messing up the process.
Edit.. is the Zip a double click file? -
The .zip is a file you just extract and then run the setup.exe
-
Sweetness.. May god bestow +Rep on you coz I need to share it before I can give it to ya. Th1s r3p bus1n3ss 15 |1k3 4n 5TD y0u ju5t n33d t0 5pr34d 1t 4r0und.

Hmmm, seems my last post in this thread was deleted. Can prolly guess why. Oh well, on to other matters.
Just installed the driver with the modded .inf and initially got a BSOD when I went to reboot after the install. But it booted back up just fine and everything is running smoothly. Won't be running any games tonight as it's kinda late, but will likely be running at least STALKER: CLEAR SKY and The Witcher tomorrow. Would give ya a +rep but it says I need to spread the wealth around. -
It's all gravy luthi.. What'd u post? And, why the BSOD? That's odd. I havent had any issues with the modded drivers yet.. Lemme know how it goes down for you
-
Prolly shouldn't post what I wrote here, nothing to bad or anything. Sent ya a PM.
Will let ya know how everything goes once I run some games tomorrow (well I guess it is tomorrow seeing as it is 12:15AM where I am lol) -
added support for 32-bit Vista install.. download is in OP.
-
wow, the download will take more than 3 days.
Any other hosting? -
lol..which download? The .zip file? Uhm.. wish I had a public FTP to upload to. You may be quicker just modding it with the instructions then
it would take me an hour to upload anywhere. -
EDITED .inf for FINAL version for download.. will notify when the .zip is updated as well.
-
so... the .inf in OP is Final version, right?
-
yes..64bit
-
completely re-did OP - easy to read instructions. all driver versions finalzied. either follow the walk-thru or download the easy install. *ta duh*
-
YAY..
, (too short lengthening to at least 10 characters)
-
worked well for me, thanks a lot E Wrecked. I appreciate the work you do for us..
-
no sweat.. enjoy
-
E-wrecked, some questions. I have uninstalled your driver and after that reinstalled it (I've done clean install already). I've noticed my CCC didn't same as before reinstalled. The direct3d setting and 16HQ (in anisotropic or anti aliasing) was disappeared. so..How do I call them back?
Edit: I've reinstalled it more than 5 times. It still disappeared. -
You'll have to bear with me, I'm not at a comp right now. It will likely be tomorrow before I can look. U using the original .inf or the newer one? If possible, try the original.
-
newer one. what's link to your original .inf?
-
I dunno..lol - lemme see if I can find it.
-
Well, with these drivers, we're pretty much even with Dual 8800M GTX/9800M GT owners in terms of Fallout 3 performance, and a bit ahead of them in terms of Far Cry 2 performance, at least from the info I'm gathering. It's a shame that such performance won't come right out of the box for prospective owners.
-
Here it is:

Thank u Luthi, will download as soon as I get a chance. Do u have the ccc options that zephyr doesn't?
