I suppose this is a question concerning LCD screens in general rather than HEL80-specific, but in any case...

Today I discovered that there are dark lumps on the certain spot on the screen. There are about 13 of them, about 2mm in size, spanning within a rectangular area of about 2*3cm. They are the most visible against white background, and invisible against black. They seem to be underneath the screen surface, so they cannot be simply wiped off. For all I know it happened quite suddenly because I always read forums which have white backgrounds, and if this had happened earlier, I would have noticed it.

I have seen these same lumps on my old laptop (7+ years old), which was already quite severly 'infected' when I inherited it. Back then I just figured the lumps must have been caused by some freak accident or simply old screen age.

What causes these lumps? Could I ever remove them? I always tried to keep my baby spot-free and suddenly discovering such a problem is quite disturbing. Any helps? :(

Did you maybe close the laptop and had something pressing on the LCD?

I dont think there is anything you can do. There are programs to get rid of stuck pixels but I dont think that is your problem.

All I can say is that I treat my laptop better than I treat myself ;)

So no, nothing pressing against the screen, or no external impact of any sort.

Have you called your dealer to see if its covered under the warranty? I know a lot of dealers offer a 3 year, but I'm not sure how the screen is handled.

I have the same 'lumps' of pixels as you say. They are darker though not completely dead. Very visible against lighter colors and not so much against darker pixels. Very annoying! I also take pretty good care of my laptop, so I dont even know when they showed up, but I do not think will cover that in their warranty....

Could either of you post pictures of these spots? It might be worth a call to your reseller anyway to inquire about possible fixes that may be available to you.

It's quite hard to get a good picture, but the lumps are more visible in real life than they are in pictures.

I live in a rather dry region (Toronto Canada) so I do not believe that is the case. ;)

As this problem is hard to describe, I think I may as well just give them a walk-in visit.

Are they old, or have they taken any physical damage?

One new model, and one that was 8 months old when it developed.

It looks like you got some kind of substance under the screen. Often this is caused by spraying screen cleaner directly on the screen instead of spraying it onto your cleaning cloth. The cleaner will then get under the screen and mix with the liquid crystals causing dark spots that almost look like water drops.

I wonder what could've caused it. All I did was to occasionally wipe the dust and smudges off using that soft eyeglasses-cleaning fabric.

    Dry, of course.

Could they be fingerprints? From when the LCD was being assembled? Although I'm assuming they would be wearing gloves for that or assembling by machine--so this idea probably holds no water ;p.
