I am looking into purchasing a new laptop and have recently been thinking of purchasing a whitebook. I just have a few questions first, how is the build quality of the whitebook? It looks kind of cheap with the glossy plastic from the pictures i've seen(please post some pics if you can) also how loud is this laptop, how is the heat? I dont want a laptop with loud fans nor one that overheats(heard of on m17) lastly, should i wait for 48xx series to be put in the whitebook and if so when can we expect them to be realeased in the whitebook?
Many thanks for all your help!

Ps i have a $3500 budget cad if that is helpful in anyway

    1) The system is definitely not cheap. It is very strong, no flex in the hinges. The only knock is that it is a glossy finish and is a fingerprint magnet. That can easily be dealt with by using a microfiber cloth.

    2) You can't really hear the fans unless you are gaming, which is when they kick up all the way. I can use it on my lap and be very comfortable with it. Heat isn't an issue with this system, nor are the fans.

    3) If you have a $3500 budget than you likely won't be able to get a system with the 48xx series in it anyways. Nobody know how much they are going to be, but they will likely be a pretty penny. As far as when they are released for the whitebook, I think I remember Rob from RK Computers saying it would be something around March. Don't quote me on that though.

As far as pictures go, if you just do a quick search around this section of the forum you will likely find a bunch.

Hoped this helped you with your decision.

Not cheap at all, this has to be one of the best built notebooks i have ever owned. Not loud either, you can hear the fans when gaming but no excessive heat. The 48xx cards i have also heard are due in march.

    there are many pictures here:

We'll see about that price drop; OCZ hasn't released any information on new pricing at this point in time.

And Rob is roughly correct with March, seeing as OCZ said the 48XX series cards should be released in Q2 2009.

If you find the super glossy black look cheap, get used to it. Apparently it's a UV resin coating; I take it that means it's a type of coating that is cured using UV light. A lot of Asus notebooks are coming out with the same finish and it's sort of a fad right now. To me it's something different. Looks sorta like a black lacquer paint job on a show car or fine lacquerware from Japan.

At least the finish matches my Sony Bravia HD TV perfect! I hook it up all the time using the HDMI port and both have the same glossy black finish.

I can only hear the fans kick up on the Whitebook if it's super quiet in the room.

I've had my Whitebook from Xotic for around two weeks now. No problems except connecting a Bluetooth mouse, but have to wait till my house has internet service to download files I need. Heard lotta complaints about Vista but so far no issues and the notebook boots up and shuts down fast. Everything works fine such as the webcam and fingerprint reader.

If you take a look at the screen, note how the hinges are designed. There is an additional hinge in the middle of the gap so the screen is secured (or has bushings) at four locations. Most screens are hinged at each end so are supported in only two locations. The Whitebook design prevents flex.

Just remember, if you do go with Alienware you can't overclock anything without voiding your warranty and the BIOS is also locked. Just something to keep in mind when it comes to Alienware, along with their customer service.

I probobly would't overclock anyway, (no idea how) Though I have heard some things that Alienware has "highend" customer support people from Roswell. (No idea is this is true just heard about it on the fourms)

If you look in the AW forum you'll find that almost everyone with hardware or software issues seem to never be satisfied with AW customer service. Highend or everyday issues, AW is not known for their customer service being helpful or friendly. Xotic, Darksmiley, Rk.. They are all known for quality systems, and exceptional customer service. Just a fair warning..

I read about that on the guru forums...

Not to say that it didn't happen as I really wouldn't put it past AW but given that K|N was accused of doing something similar to Xotic, in order to degrade Xotic's support, and got caught in the same way, Im going to remain very skeptical.

Yeah i see that it is a indicator. but for what. (is it battery, hdd, etc.)
it is one the back so it must be a very bright light so it can indicate something to you facing the other way. Lol.

    what color is it.

It's a bit deceiving: the whole thing doesn't light up. It just shows battery/power status.

It's a bit more complicated than that; I really just swapped only the lid: everything else fits (i.e. the screen frame of the OCZ, camera, etc.), but I had to remove the entire top in order to swap it.
