Hey guys.. I know there has been a debate on which cards are better.. the 9800 Series in SLI or the 3870 in Crossfire. There have been some folks who knock on the ATIs because FC2 ran SOO horrid. And then those same folks say that the 3870s are just "conveniently better at 3dmark". Well, to the naysayers abroad.. here's an idea of what these cards have in store for us. This is the first bench I've ran with the 8.12 Beta Drivers which can be, and should be downloaded HERE.
This is the 8.11 Cat Pack w/ modded inf running @ 1920.1200 w/ all Ultra Settings and no AA

And, here's the 8.12-Beta version same settings

Well, as I said a month ago.. Our drivers needed to be upgraded! And, it looks like ATI has stepped up and is now supporting these cards a bit better. Notice, the FPS are almost exactly doubled. Meaning, it now PERFORMS IN CROSSFIRE. Keep in mind, these are the Beta's and hopefully the final driver versions will perform even better. But hey.. Im not complainin' seeing as these cards are now being utilized properly. Gonna run some more benches and post results. DMC4 is next..

Nice! I also tried them but for GTA 4. It only netted me an average of 1.5fps increase from 27fps with the 8.11 drivers. I still have the problem of all the available resolutions in the game producing constant fps results, regardless of texture and render quality.
-
that's cause of the scaling issue..right?
-
Also, forcing AA doesn't seem to work on GTA either. -
Great!! is this beta version stable ? i will try it!!
-
very stable..
ichime, trying to mod the .inf now..
The modded .inf isnt workin just yet.. gimme a few minutes or until tomorrow and i'll attempt to fix. -
Congratz on the benchies, for a while it looked like you guys were getting whooped in real game FPS. Now your lappies are playable. I would have been angry if I spent that much money for a system that didnt have playable framerates. Looking good.
Side note: Are you experiencing stuttering in FarCry 2, because your minimum FPS drops waaaaay down to 12.16 FPS - which is not really playable if it happens frequently, lets say in a heated battle in Crysis.
Can you do a crysis bench with the new drivers?
Settings: 1900x1200, No AA All VERY HIGH
Your results may influence me buying myself this laptop. Thank you in advance. : ) -
That 9FPS was with previous drivers
and yea.. Ill run some crysis benchies. Gimme a bit and I'll post em.
-
My 9262 Has been RMA'ed and I may sell it when I get it back. Thank you E-wrecked and ichime for your comprehensive test and feedback on your laptops. I think I have made my decision to get one. I believe the 9262 is getting a little dated.... still the king of the hill for now, but I think the OCZ has more potential that has been untapped to take the crown away from the 9262. Only oppinions tho.
-
Just curious, is there a difference from the modded inf you use and the modification done by the mobility modder tool?
-
no.. the modded .inf was for scaling. The 8.12 is the newer driver available for utilizing Crossfire and all stream processors.
-
still working on the .inf - gimme til tomorrow and hopefully I'll have fit to screen working..
-
How many stream processors were being utilized before?
-
I'm not going to continue working on the .inf - Waiting for the 8.12 Final and if it doesn't support the resolutions, then I will mod the .inf to add support.
Falken: I shoulda used a different term. But, my point was the Cards are actually running close to full speed now by utilizing the stream processors.
And, here's the FC2 bench just ran with these beautiful 8.12's. Only wish I could OC the GPU but it doesn't look plausible right now. :/
1920.1200 - No AA - Ultra High Settings
-
Also, for comparison, here are Johnksss' results with the same settings (minus the refresh frequency):
Basically you guys are about 5fps apart. Interestingly, his system has a lower min and lower max on average, but holds framerates better than your system. I'd definitely like to see how quad cores in the whitebook play out with these new drivers.
side note: I'd definitely like to see what MastaMarek thinks of this -
lol.. yeah, would be nice to see what he has to say
And, that's running @ 3.3GHz via BIOS and then a slight FSB pump.. I think it was @ 3.49 GHz. john asked that I run stock 3.06 so I'll post them in a few minutes..brb
-
I notice 8.12 driver makes the GPU 2 to 3 degree higher in temperature during idle.
-
Ok..just ran Crysis @ 1920.1200 Very High Settings - No AA - Fullscreen w/ 8.12 Beta -

Not too shabby.. -
oh, im sorry...here was the other other one...
-
john, why you gotta go showing me up ma'an?
That 2nd set is with the VBIOS changes, yes? And..how was your crysis run @ 1920.1200?
-
i was content on being quiet, till i seen that comparison stuff and that frame rate stuff. hahahaha
let me run that for you right now. ill do both. not sure whos idea to start with the very high runs of crysis..opps, yeah i do. never mind. *LOL* (not you either)
1920@very high
1920@high
and ill show you what i mean E about the software down clocking -
aaight.. I like the method. It sounds very intelligent. Never thought of going that route. Hence, lack of intelligence between my ears.
-
nope, just info wasn't spread fast enough was all.
everything stock or at normal speeds.
crysis very high stock no over clock
crysis high stock no over clock
-
How about Crysis at just high settings, and did the new drivers have any effect on the games some of us benchmarked earlier, like DMC4 and others?
-
johns last pic is @ high settings.. stock. I'll run mine too @ high & stock. Im gettin closer to resolving the full screen resolution issue. KS from DNA is offering a hand. I think I found the code in the .inf that screwed it up. Anyhow, gonna re-install 8.12 - been testing DNA 8.11. And, DMC4 showed no improvements for myself.. I'll run it @ stock 3.06 vs 3.33 and post.
-
Just curious, I notice both of you (johnksss and E-wrecked) are running off 60hz. Is that actually making a difference in the speed of the cards (nVidia and ATI respectively)?
-
-
So then why run at 59 Hz for the ATI and 61 HZ for nVidia. Surely you don't see anything there...
-
I ran @59 cause it was the default for FC2. So..why not? Can run @ 60 as well. But, never really gave it much thought.
-
next time, paste the results in the ie window and it will come in short like mine.
-
wow E-wrecked, your cpu was oc'ed to 3.9 !! How did you manage to get that?
-
E-wrecked- About the refresh rate question, I was asking because I seem to remember issues 6-8 years ago where refresh rate could have an effect on overall graphics card speed. I think it may have been a DAC issue, but I was thinking you guys were changing it for more speed and I wanted to know more as I thought that old issue was long gone. Apparently its not related, and I've obviously gone crazy.
-
ahhh... well, lemme give it another run or 2 for ya and find out
-
btw, did any of u guys got gta4 running in crossfire 3870 cuz mine only show resource 500mb which is only 1 card
-
depends on which driver you're using.. I think 8.12 fixed that, I may be wrong.
-
after installation to 8.12 it went from 498 to 500mb in gta4, but not crossfire, i only install this update to play gta4 in crossfire but guess it aint gonna happen, probably need rockstar patch or something
-
Hmm..you sure it's not running in Crossfire? And yea..GTA likely needs a patch or two, from what I hear. If you right click the ATI in your taskbar, then select the first vid card, then CrossFireX options..it will give you an option to display when it's running in crossfire. See if it shows the logo when running GTA. If it does, then it's working..if not, then it's not working.
-
yea it shows crossfirex in game, but its BULL SHET! aint no crossfire even crysis run smoother than this crap
-
GTA4 has some major issues from what I've hear.. memory leaks or something like that. Horrid port to the PC. They'll have a huge patch out in the near future, otherwise no one will ever buy a GTA game for the PC again.
-
Hey E- is this the release we were talking about on the other thread.. and should I get it for my Laptop?
-
naw man.. there's a thread i posted with 8.12 full screen modded .inf stuff - That's the one to download. I put it in .zip format to make it easy.
-
I found it and posted on it.
ATI 8.12 Beta - You gotta see this! Benchmark results inside..
