Step 1: Remove the battery and unplug the 1050. Then, open the DVD/CDR door, hold the tray, and then tug off the outside beizel of the drive. It attaches at the very end towards the ethernet port, and about an inch from the other end of the tray. Just tug and believe, and it will pop off.
Step 2: Remove the bolts in the hinges on the back of the laptop. Put them with the CD bezel.
Step 3: Turn the laptop face down with the lid closed. Trackpad towards you. You can now loosten all the remaining screws, leave them in place, and then carefully remove the bottom case.
The loose bolts can stay in their respective holes, if you clear off your desk, you can put the whole bottom (minuse the hinge bolts from the very back of the 1050) down with all bolts in place. This way, you don't need to remember which bolt came from where.
The bottom case comes free from the right, to the left. That is from the DVD/CDR side to the left VGA out side. The VGA out port is the stickiest place. Gently work the case and it will come free. You may need to re-losten some of the screws if they catch.
All the bolts need to come out. 2 teeny bolts from the DVD/CDR edge, 4 bolts from the hard drive, all the bolts around the edge of the case, the bolts underneath the rubber plugs in the bottom. The bolt under the void if removed sticker.
The switch for the wireless on/off will fall out. Put it with the DVD/CDR beziel and the vertical hinge bolts.
Step 4: Remove black foam at left end of the hard drive.
Step 5: Gently work the hard drive free from the connector.
Step 6: Gently work the new hard drive into the connector and replace foam block.
Step 7: Put case bottom back on. Before tightening any bolts, put the plastic switch for the wireless back in and make sure it clicks the switch when it moves back and forth.
Step 8: Tighten up all the bolts.
Step 9: Put the battery back in, plug in the power supply, and power up.
The *trick* is to remove that DVD/CDR beizel before you try to get the bottom of the case off.
