I am looking at a AV3250HX80 for $900 and it looks like a good deal, but I am worried about the quality level of these laptops. The part that worries me is the screen hinges that appear to be lightweight for day to day use.

Any comments on this or general Averatec quality?

Also, how responsive is the video in that it is shared vs. dedicated

I would like to know about the quality, too. I've looked at other brands, but am considering both the Averatec 6150 and the 3250. I really don't need as much computer as the 6150--mostly word processing, e-mail and power-point/other video presentations. The 3250 seems such a great deal right now, but I want it to last. I saw some postings from 4/03 on other threads of this forum, but don't know if they kept the older models or upgraded. Has anyone had an Averatec for at least 9 months to a year?

In response to your question about dedicated vs. shared video memory . Shared subtracts from that of your system memory. For example , if you have a laptop w/ 512mb of RAM and a shared video memory of 64mb , then (512-64=448) you will be left with 448mb of RAM for doing applications, games, etc. On the other hand, dedicated video ram uses a stand-alone chip called the GPU(Graphics Processing Unit).
Because dedicated video has its own memory , it is much faster, and much more suited to graphically intensive programs such as high-end games. 32mb dedicated kicks the ass of 64mb shared. get the picture?
HOWEVER , if you have 1Gb RAM, you can have 64 or even 128mb shared and be fine. So, it really depends on your system specs. Hope this helps.

They are very good quality for the dollar. I would not hesitate to buy Averatec for a friend or family member.

If $1000 is all you can spend and you HAVE to have a 4lb notebook then it is your only choice. If you want something that performs and doesn't have flakey wireless and you don't care that it is 7 or 8 lbs go buy something else like a dell or sony.

Personally i love my 3220H, it is so cost efficient and good. I only do word processing, presentation, and image editing. I think it is fine.

I bought my 3250 last week from CC and I'm very pleased. Last year I used an HP ZT3000 (6.5 lbs) with a 15" screen and it was too clumsey and heavy for me. I wanted something that's: easier to handle, light weight, good screen, acceptable keyboard. I just use it for email, browsing and for wordprocessing. Maybe watch a movie when traveling. I love the 3250...it's a go everywhere notebook.

I installed the 3 power management utilities recommended on the averatec board. I don't really understand them but they boosted my battery life (while playing a dvd) from 1 hour to a little over 2 hours. I get around 3 hours for wireless use reading email and some wordprocessing.

It doesnt run hot now but even at it's worst it's wasn't hotter than my old IBM 560 thinkpad which was 5.5 lbs.

    I'm happy with my notebook!

I bought the 6130hs notebook and I'm happy with it. You know dell and sony(suck) don't make their own notebooks.
