Hi everyone,
My Averatec 6200 has been working fine, but when I brought it over from the States to use in the United Kingdom (this is not the first time), the fan wouldn't turn on during the boot sequence (or at the very least, I don't hear it, and loud as it usually is, I should). Consequently, the computer overheats and shuts down on its own accord, usually somewhere between loading the OS and me logging into Windows.
If the computer's not plugged in and runs on the battery, I can still turn on the OS (I think due to the battery management settings), and get about 20 minutes of work done before the thing crashes on its own accord. I think it's a fan issue, but how do I go about fixing it?
This happened the last time I brought the AVERATEC over from the States, and the next day it started working on its own accord, fan and all. Is it possible to repeat this miraculous event twice? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well it does sound very much like an overheating problem. Now I am not familiar with your model but you should quite easily be able to open the bottom of the laptop to get to the fan and verify whether or not it's a- running b- it's securely plugged in(it may have come loose) and c- if you are adventurous plug a couple of probes on the motherboard fan leads and see if you get power at some point if all else fails.
Good luck,

This may or may not work...
It's possible that during the normal bumps of transit, the fan blades or bearing may be jammed. With the PC off, use a toothpick to reach through the grill and turn the fan manually back and forth several times.
Then restart the PC and see if the fan spins on its own.
It's quick, it's easy, it's cheap, it won't harm anything, and it might solve the problem. -
Just an interesting side-note. There was quite a bit of discussion in the old forum about the 7100 and that later models had a sticker placed directly below the fan to prevent it from sucking air directly from underneath through the grills put in there for that.
With several other inputs from othe forums and taking a good look at it, I can say unequivocally that it's there, the blocking sticker that is, to prevent the fan from sucking dust, lint, and other not wanted goodies into the fan itself, ultimately freezing it up with the same problems ak362 is complaining about.
Certainly worth taking the bottom off and checking and, if clogged, clean out as much as you can with tweezers and then give it a light blow with either canned air or an air compressor set on low pressure. And, as Jim said, turn it lightly to free it up if something won't come out.
Bet a bunch that's it.
