    Hello All,

I've been looking for a Desktop Replacement for about 2 weeks and stumbled into this great Forum through Google.

While crusing the Forum I discovered Sharp has Laptops and found the Actius RD20 in the Sharp Online Store Refurbed for a nice price.

Anyone have any experience or opinions of this model?

Read one reveiw about it and it had it's good and bad points, like any Laptop.

I really wanted a wide screen model, but Sharp doesn't make one and at the price they have this for, it might be worth sacraficing the screen size.

    Thanks in advance.

What is your budget and what do you plan on doing with the notebook? There are so many new notebooks coming out soon, you may want to hang out and see what becomes available. Couple things, it is a Pentium M machine so the battery life is not going to be great. It is heavy, over ten pounds. Good Luck.

    Thanks for the reply Zazonz.

I guess, first, I won't be doing anything until March. When you say wait, do you have an ETA in mind. I understand you can't nail it down, but maybe a ballpark timeline?

As far as the battery life, it's not a concern. I really am looking for a desktop replacement. It will spend most of it's life sitting on my desk. I just want the ability to go mobile for brief periods of time.

I think that I'm starting to lean towards an Acer Aspire 1800 Series. I'm trying to stay in the $1500 range. The Aspire excedes that price point by about $200, but the style and features make it worth the little extra.

But all is still open for discussion, I have several weeks to wait for a check to come in.

    Thanks again.

    Good Morning zazonz,

General use, a little gaming (Halo PC), some graphics work with DreamWeaver, download and burn movies (maybe, but an outboard burner may be a better choice there), surfing, etc. A pretty wide range of things, but nothing that is mission critical, all personal enjoyment, challenge and learning. I will probably take some management classes this year and I want to take a design class as well.

I know that this is off topic for this part of the Forum, but from what I'm reading the Acer 1800 series might be a good all around choice. But at that price point I can build an Asus m6bne and have a more configurable laptop that will grow with me into the future.

Right now I'm still realing from all of the choices that are available to me. Keeping the price point around $1500, give or take a couple of hundred, gives me a lot of room to move in. I'm not a maniac gamer, so I really don't feel like I need to break the $2000 mark to get a good laptop that will last me a few years.

I've got an HP Pavilion ze5385us right now and it has served well, but is a little lack luster when it comes to multi-tasking and graphics. I also, only paid about $800 for it when it was new, so for that price point it has done very well. I have a decent sized sum of money coming in March and have decided to move up a few notches on the laptop and sell my HP on EBay, so part of the new laptops cost will get recoverd by that.

I apologize if I've moved too far off topic for this part of the forum, so Moderator, if you want to move this thread to a more appropriate spot, please do.

Thanks for the input zanzonz.[ :D]

Like next month or shortly after. Mostly the new notebooks that are coming out are the new Pentium Ms. People always say they don't care about battery life before they buy, but having to reach for the charger after a couple hours is a drag. You'll probably get a better deal on the older Pentium M based machines. What do you plan on doing with the machine?

If you are going to be carrying this around to class, I'd definetly recommend something lighter. You'll get the best quality from IBM and Fujitsu. The new T43 is supoosed to be out soon. I'd take a look at this:

    http://www.costcentral.com/proddetail/IBM_ThinkPad_T42_2378/2378FVU/D88536/

IBMs quality, service and support are all top notch. Throw in some more memory and you are good to go. An external DVD burner is probably the best choice. They are faster and IBMs laptop drives are only -R and expensive. Good Luck.
