I've managed to get my Averatec 6200 with XP Home in such a state of virus illness that I can't get XP to open up. I get the XP intro screen or whatever it's called. When I click to log in, it behaves as though it's going to proceed, but then logs off almost immediately. The same thing happens in various safe modes, and safe command mode never presents a spot for commands.

I've managed to establish an apparent command mode with a couple of old Windows disks. But those are set up to pretend that C: is RAM, won't recognize any drive other than that and G:, the optical drive, thus no entry to the hard disk.

At this point all I want to do is get into the machine to be able to copy some essential data files, then I'll reinstall.

Any advice very much appreciated, indeed.

(I've found the site below in the UK, selling a boot disk. Does anyone have any experience with them?

I would download a Linux live distro and copy from there... Any one of them would be able to do what you want.

You can also create a bootable BartPE cd on another system and use that to copy your essential files from the 6200.
