I ordered my Compal HGL-30 Tuesday. I'm anxious. And excited. And happy. But mostly I'm trying not to think about it so I can get my schoolwork done, cause Chaucer tests are tough, especially when you didn't do the readings yet (by the way, the Miller's Tale is disgusting, vulgar, and hilarious). Anyway, nobody cares about that. Or any of this, really. Powernotebooks.com was great so far; answered my questions, sent me some emails. Good experience. Can't wait to see the notebook.

*paces impatiently since that should happen either today or tomorrow* -
Congratulations magicshoemonkey! I'm sure you'll love the HGL30 when it comes in.
Now are you an English major or just taking a Literature class to satisfy a core requirement? Chaucer is some good reading though. -

I'm working on my MA in English. It's great, really. I love the banter between the Miller and the Reeve, and how the tales go from the Knight's glorified, idealized tale of love and beauty to the Miller's and Reeve's tales of infidelity and "she has a beard," probably the most grossly hilarious statement ever in literature.
I'm really looking forward to the HGL30. I can't wait to fire it up and test it out. -

It shipped! It should be at my house tomorrow! Only problem is, I won't be here all day, got class until 4. Don't know how that's going to work, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

When I've played around with it for a while I'll try to post some kind of opinion/review on here, if possible. There really aren't that many reviews of the HGL30, which almost put me off at first, but I realized it's only been out a couple of months.

It's here! Everythings going great with it so far. I'm trying to get it to connect to the internet right now, but for some reason it's not going through (something about not renewing ip address or something, I don't know, I'll have to figure this out). Anyway, that's probably my fault somehow. Otherwise everythings is fine. Haven't tried any games or anything yet, thought I'd wait until tomorrow, but I put a Veronica Mars DVD in there and it played really well, started up fast. Anyway, that's about it. Just thought I'd tell somebody.

I discovered my problem. Apparently my ISP only allows one computer per household unless you pay an extra $10 a month. Kind of annoying; probably typical. Anyway, I spoofed my MAC so I could at least get virus and windows updates and that kind of thing. Otherwise things are great. Just ordered a bluetooth mouse (Bestbuy doesn't even sell them; just ordered one from Newegg, better company anyway) and bought some games. Going to try them out after everything is loaded (Oblivion and Rome: Total War).

monkey, get a cable/dsl router

Yeah, I probably will. Only thing about it is my laptop is upstairs and my desktop is downstairs. It'll be a pain running wires that far.
-
Get a wireless one
Connect the desktop to the wired ports, and use wireless for the laptop. You'll need a wireless NIC if you didn't get the integrated one. -

Will the ISP let that through? I mean, would they be able to tell that I had two computers connected through the router? Or would it work without their involvement (They offer home networking through their service, and I kind of wonder if they would be able to keep you from home networking without them)?
In fact, I just saw they have this reference on their support page that says if you connect two computers through a router you have to order multiple computer service. Kind of annoying, still. Guys used to connect multiple computers through a router at school in the dorm all the time. University hated it, some people found a way around it.
I just kind of asked this question on the networking forum; maybe more response. In other words, nevermind here.
By the way, Oblivion runs great. Don't know about Rome, yet. Haven't tried it. But if Oblivion runs as well as it does at hight settings, I can't see Rome being any trouble. -
Your issue is that your internet provider only gives you one address for an internet connection. This address can be bound to any device capable of assuming the communication with the modem. A router is designed to act as sort of a traffic cop, and makes multiple machines all fit on the one pipe.
A little demonstration:
PC1 - PC2 - PC3 - etc... = Seperate network connections (car)
Router = 1 connection (traffic cop)
Modem = 1 Connection allowed. (street)
Because the router assumes the role of the "one" address you are given, and then supplies data between the systems connected, you can bypass the internets provided limit of 1 system. -

Thanks. Yeah, that's pretty much what other people said, too. I ordered a router. When it gets here I'll try to get it set up right.

You shouldn't have a hard time getting both systems online once you get your wireless router.
Again, pointless heralding of ordered laptops
