I'm not really sure where to locate this thread so I'm sticking it in here since I always get good advice from the Compal folks...

I am really annoyed with the task bar icons that pop up whenever my wireless is off or i disconnect my LAN. I can go to properties and hide them always, but the next time i switch off the wireless or LAN they pop right back up. Is there a way to permanently stop these from showing up?

Those are called "Balloon Tips" popups. You can either disable them from the application itself (impossible in this case), or you can disable them system-wide (in which case you won't get ANY of those popups, even for upgrades, etc.), and you do that with TweakUI under the "Taskbar and Start Menu" option, then just untick the box next to "Enable balloon tips"

I use XP Anti-Spy to disable the annoying balloon tips and have found all my programs will actually still do their own pop ups when they have updates to download. I'm a big fan of Anti-Spy (Freeware), as it shuts off a lot of the Microsoft junk that you don't need. If you still need balloon tips after a week of using XP, then there is an issue....

I personally prefer TweakUI, as I don't like software doing too much stuff automatically ;)

Uhm.. if you are using the intel chipset for wireless, the utility *double click the connection strength icon in the tray* has a way to disable them.
