You should consider the FAQ and post there. Averatecs in general do not offer top quality.

get a 2100 (2155) Like I did. If your into modding get 2gb of ram, 8 cell battery, and mt40 upgrades and up the video to 128 and enjoy a very nice notebook with casual gaming abilities. I use mine for work multitasking , home multitasking, and gaming. Not to get flammed by the video nazi's, but with 2gb of ram and the video cranked up I get very good gaming in my book. Granted Illl take my nice sff for hardcore gaming but this little dynomo will do for travel.

This brand seems to have a great apppeal for people who like to break the seal on the box, remove the unit and start fixing it.

If you are not inclined to take it apart and remedy issues perhaps anothr brand would suit you more.

    good luck with your purchase.

Please refrain from swearing.. Also, one month isn't long enough to have a laptop and think it'll have no problems, I have nothing against Averatec, I'm just saying...

My grandmother has an Averatec, the old 6100 series, I like it, the build seems pretty good and it runs pretty cool for a P4. I use it when I go over to her house and nothing seems to be wrong with it after having it around a year or so, something like that..

I didnt cuss I said a decent word and it blurred out (starts with c and ends with p).

well 2 laptops ago I had a compaq that spent 95%of its life in the shop. And it was a p2 so of the many years I had it it was gone.

My 6200 (the one I'm using right now to send this post) is still trucking along. I bought it August 2004 and so far (knocking on available wood) I have had not one issue with it. Zero. It did everything as advertised, and WELL. Do I trust the brand? No. But I couldn't beat the feature list for the price, so I decided to give Averatec a try, and so far I'm a satisfied customer. Good luck with whatever you decide.

It seems that it is the 3200 Series that had the bulk of the problems between case cracks and defective power jack, while the 1000 Series had touchpad problems and confidence in the brand across the board has suffered.

Then the poor customer support to solve these problems didn't help matters.

But it is going to take awhile before the consumer gains back any confidence in the brand.

And apart from poor battery performance on my 3250 (down to 50 minutes after 14 months) it did not have any of the common problems <knock wood>.

Oh, the high fan speed at startup is a characteristic that you have to hear to believe.

Unfortunately neither CNET, nor any other magazine for that matter, does long-term reviews. Of course the laptop will run fine for the first month (especially if it's sent by Averatec and not off the shelf.)

Averatec is the worst-quality notebook I've ever seen bar none. My friend bought one a couple years ago, and the screen almost fell off because the hinges broke. Although her handyman dad doesn't know jacksh*t about computers, i was impressed when he fixed it with some good old behemoth sized screws and other such parts raided from his industrial toolbox. Future Shop (where it was bought) was asking $500 to fix it those bloodsucking leeches. The battery has also deteriorated to the point where it literally provides 90 seconds of life before the computer shuts down. The fan also runs constantly, much of the cheap silver finish has worn off, and the exterior feels like an oven when running. I'll post some pictures some day when I get my camera fixed...but you really have to see it to believe it. Averatec is a total joke, a very very cruel joke. Never ever buy this brand.

PS I believe it was the 3150 model

Why bother with long term reviews when you can be reviewing the latest and greatest instead?

I wish someone would do with laptops what Car & Driver does with cars - long term reviews over months, years.

Of course, most of the models would be discontinued by the time you could get good data, but at least you could build consensus about the quality of a brand.

Its sort of the thing where youre in wal mart and the e machines is just too fancy for you

actually, Im pretty sure its MSI.....
As long as your looking at the 12.1" widescreen one (that is the one by MSI, and i think the 17" one is as well), the quality shouldnt be that bad. MSI is not by anymeans a bad company.
However, the others, 3000 series especially, are horrid in quality.

I had a 3150 for less than 2 years and my hard drive has blown, the case is cracking, and the cd drive doesn't work. Avoid them and buy an Acer.

I've had a 2150 for a few months now (going on 3, I think.) It's running great, without a hitch.
I know some of them do have problems, but I know the 2100 series is made MSI, and I've used their parts for years, without a problem. I know a handful of people have had problems, but I think they are about the same as any other manufacturer.

I bought my 6130hs a little over 2 years ago and I've have no problems with it. The screen still provides a bright crisp picture, I can play all the latest 3D games on it. Everything is original besides adding a gig of ram to it.
