Hey,
I've been running HWMonitor lately and have been noticing some rather high temps on my GPUs, one seems too be much higher than the other... one hit 93 degrees the other day while I was playing Dawn of War 2 (On my Cryo NZXT cooler too)... just want to make sure if it is normal or if I should go bug the resellers about it. Had it since January...
These temps taken on a clear desk without the notebook cooler (Celcius):
Idle (5 minutes of idling)
3870 #1 Min: 57 Max: 61
3870 #2 Min: 42 Max: 45
Under load (10-15 minutes of Dawn of War 2 Army Painter, settings on 1920x1200 and high)
3870 #1 Min: 57 Max: 100
3870 #2 Min: 42 Max: 88
Also noticed one is consistently 12-20 degrees higher than the other...
Thanks in advance for any advice

that is not good. even though dawn of war is a stressful game.
tape may have been left on you gpu. open your cover to see. -
yeah. 100 degrees is definitely not normal. Check to see if the thermal paste is applied correctly or at all.
-
yeah the reason why 1 is higher than the other is because 1 is the master card, and the other is the slave. the master will have the higher temps, and also sends data through pci x16 bus where i believe the slave goes through pci x8 bus.
but yeah open it up, clean out any dust. but i suggest getting arctic silver 5 and applying that on the cpu and gpu's. -
lol it will not be that much higher
i think your paste is not applied correctly on the high one if the tape was on he would bsod quickly fusion couldnt even play a game -
I don't known why but my temps never reached more then 70C :| not even in intensive applications :|
though just 1x3870 and a P8400 1xhdd and 1x2gb -

even though you have only one gpu. it should past 70 sometimes. this could dangerous but nothing to panick about. there has been some post about other people not pasting 70.
question. have you ever heard your fan go on full blast when gaming. not the one on the left but the one in the back.
your left one shouldnt pass 65 70. because that is you cpu. and you have the p series so it is at 25w and stocked. but your gpu should.
these games make my gpu get warmed up pretty good. dmc4 and max it out. crysis does to but not really. it doesnt even make my cpu past 75. staker clear sky. fear should.
notes make sure you max out the res. and your graphic settings are maxed out.
if you have a 1920*1200 screen it should warm up pretty good. if you have a 1400*900 then it is going to take a while. -
I've heard the fan on the back on full blast but very rarely. my screen is 1920x1200.
today I tried crisys and I had 72cmakes me want to overclock :x is it possible to overclock these 3870? I only have experience in desktops :<

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll run through them
As for Artic Silver 5, I asked for it on the CPU but when I asked them about putting it on the GPUs, the salesman asked their technician and he said it was incompatible with the card? Something about using a thermal pad instead of thermal paste? No idea if it was true or not as I have no experience with thermal compounds or GPUs in general... I'll take a look at some tutorials on the forums...
Anyone know the normal range of temps for an Arima W840? It'd be really helpful to have some sort of benchmark XD -
well as5 is somewhat conductive so you do have to be careful with it on gpu die's that you dont get it on anything around the die that may be what he meant by that. i only use mx2 myself now.

Well, the thing with the 3870 cards is they DO come with that funky tape that technically keeps the contact points isolated from something like AS5 (or any other compound).
I removed the tape as always. This is my 6th Whitebook I've set up (but the first that is mine, so it gets extra babying), and I immediately removed the stock CPU/GPU thermal solution and the tape off the GPUs.
I use AS5, but the thing is to spread it micro thin and only over the die area. People tend to either go slap happy with it (more is better), or they put a single dollop in the middle and let the pressure heat spread it out which usually ends up with spillage. Take the time with a fine, PLASTIC edge (like a old credit card) or even your finger with plastic and use it to apply a super thin layer over the surface.
Most laptops and desktops I end up going through and cleaning up the thermal mess, checking the air flow and cleaning up the internals before doing anything. -
does anyone knowns if the graphic cards are assembled by flextronics? they sell it in 4 versions... blueray or dvd and 1 or 2 3870... they send the cards apart from the rest?

i am not getting your question?

He's asking does Flex ship the units with no video cards and the OEMs/VARs install them or do the units ship from Flex in 1 of the 4 flavors offered:
Crossfire w/ DVDRW
Single w/ DVDRW
Crossfire w/ Bluray
Single w/ Blueray
I would tend to think they ship completely integrated from Flex with either 1 or 2 GPUs and either BR or DVDRW. -

i think that the companies get the barebone unit from flex and then get the cards from ati, the processor from intel, etc. or depend on if they want, they can get it from flex. it depends on the company. i think this because alienware had the problem with the tape on the gpu, and ocz had the problem with the wifi in the wrong slot. it was never vice versa.
and the ocz's when people put up there temps ran alittle cooler then the alienware. not saying that alienware suck. but this is what i saw. -
they all come with a single card to the vendor from what ocz told me. then they will add the additional card, they also add the wifi card before shipping as well even in the barebones
Arima W840 temps...
