Try external USB mouse, that can save you time and money.
If you want to get the touchpad to work, try reinstall the driver and see if that works!
Hope this helps!

Its a hardwatre issue, reinstalling driver doesn't help.

I can't speak specifically to the 1020, but every other touchpad I've seen uses momentary contact microswitches under the parts the user presses.
If this IS a mechanical issue, you will need to get to those microswitches under the touchpad buttons. You can try adding a drop of electric contact cleaner* to each switch and hope the fluid seeps in and does its job. Assuming the issue is a simple contact oxidation layer, this may be all you need.
(*WD-40 or other stuff from the hardware store is NOT a contact cleaner - typically this stuff is only available through electronic repair shops or electronic component retailers, and the BEST stuff I've used is sold through avionics repair shops for aircraft use - and yes, it IS expensive)
If this doesn't do the job, I'd say the switches are shot. Replacement is neither easy nor cheap. Use an external pointing device. -
I may as well just get the Eee PC when I get the money then. Thanks.

As far as I know the touchpad of my AV1020-ED2 is capacitive, non-mechanical. Consult the touchpad manufacturer's website for details. Check in the touchpad preferences whether you can adjust the sensitivity. I didn't change mine, it is quicker to tap once more. It could also be the processor circuit working at 100% load, then there is nothing left for monitoring the touchpad for your tickling it.
