I acquired an Averatec 2370 from my roommate that he stepped on and thus broke and is too lazy to fix and i enjoy messing around with computer so I took it off his hands. The screen was broke right above where the hdd is located when the lid is closed. The problem is that it freezes before it loads windows or immediatly after. It will boot into safe mode and run until u try to run a bigger program. Device Manager says everything is running properly. I have a new hdd for it but when i put it in and put in my vista install disc (not supplied by averatec) it will load the files then freeze or i get the black screen that says windowsroot\system32\hal.dll. Any help on what is wrong or what i'm doing wrong to get it too work would be much appreciated

This sounds a lot like a corrupted RAM problem, but in fact there are many possibilities. My first suggestion is to download the Memtest86 .iso, burn the bootable CD and run this program. It will take several hours to run, but you will have a through test of the memory sub-system. Make sure you have plenty of cooling as your PC will be running full-tilt the whole time.

If the PC passes this test, then it is time to look elsewhere.
