    Hi all-

I just purchased a 2500 series latop with Vista installed.

It has problems powering on and waking up from sleep/hibernate.

It is able to power on and wake up only if the computer is still "warm" - that is if it was on recently. Once it has been off for awhile, I will need to power off and on a few times until it will actually start.

To clarify, the blue light goes on and I can hear some fan noise, etc. but nothing else - the screen stays black.

Tech support recommended a System recovery which didn't improve the situation.

I also see a MsgSysCtrl error message quite frequently and cannot install Vista Service pack 1. I am wondering if these are typical symptoms.

    Thanks!!

If you have any peripherals connected, in particular an external monitor, unplug each to see if it's causing it. I know that my HDX will do that occasionally if my HDMI connector is plugged in, which hooks it to my 32" Aquos. When it comes out of Sleep/Hibernate, it sometimes won't recognize that the notebook monitor is the main display - but it won't route video the the external either.

What I do to recover from it is to hit the Power key once - that will send it back into Sleep. Then I push the Power button again to give it a full wakeup. It's only waking up from the lid that I have the issue.

Unplugging other peripherals is just standard troubleshooting technique to rule out a faulty device that might be causing a problem on Wake up.

You can also find out in your Event Logs/Performance Window which processes are giving you grief.

    1. Go to Control Panel, Performance Information.
    2. Click on Advanced Tools.

Any problem processes interfering with wake up will be shown with a yellow exclamation icon next to it.

You probably have never realized it, but you likely haven't needed to do a full power down to recover - or if you were just pushing the button quickly instead of holding it, that's not enough to shut it down.

Check your Power Plan's Advanced Settings also, as they will affect your Hibernate/Sleep/Wakeup processes, and also tell you what pushing the Power button will do.

    1. Control Panel, Power, Change Plan Settings.
    2. Change Advanced Power Settings.
    3. Navigate to the Sleep & Power Buttons/Lid Settings

Note the settings for each - all mine I've set to Sleep rather than Hibernate as many systems seem to have problems waking from Hibernate. Under the Sleep/Sleep After setting, on AC it's set to never. so it can't sleep unless I want it to.
