I'm afraid to ask this, but does anyone have an opinion about the 2500 series (12.1").
All I see in this forum is Averatec machines dieing and falling apart....
Anyway, I saw the Averatec 12.1" at Sams Club and it seems nice. It's around $800. Seems kind of big for a 12.1" but also not as expensive as others.
I haven't seen many reviews on it.
-
Averatec doesn't really appeal to me.
I can't really state anything with experience, but my opinion is get an HP.
There's the DV2700T which starts at $650. My friend has that and he enjoys it very much. It has 7 hours of battery life on the 12 cell. -
I got one ... the 2575 model
THE GOOD:
Great build
NICE keyboard
FAST processor
Bright screen / display
Excellent touchpad
THE BAD:
Standard Battery .. drains to fast . because its just a 4cell with a 12.1" display

I installed XP (I found all the drivers at Korean Averatec site)..
I did some upgrades > 320gb harddrive swap , installed 4GB ram ( xp recognizes 3.2GB not bad at all ) .. and I bought an extended battery 8-cell
Im very pleased with this machine ...
ps. you can set in bios 256MB to video memory
Some pics from another site > 2500 series (not the 2575, but almost identical)

I just bought one of these laptops. Great to start with at least. It's a wonderful deal for the size.
Could you tell me where you bought the large battery? I might be interested in getting one. -
Nevermind, I found the battery on shopaveratec.com
Also thought I should mention that I purchased mine for $698 at Sam's club. It's very fast and powerful for not much more money than some netbooks. 6 months to return it, and added an extra 3 years of warranty coverage for $79. -
I just got one too from Sam's Club with the 3 year warranty. The build is much better than previous Averatec laptops. God Bless
-
anyone know where i can get drivers for XP? i couldn't find the "Korean Averatec" site pvillasuso mentioned above.
thanks.
EDIT: nevermind, i think i got it. -
Can you please post the site where you were able to download the Windows XP drivers ?? Thanks. -
Can you extract them from the Averatec 7100 XP cab files? We would upload/mail copies of our clean XPHome.

If this does not solve your problem, the issue is likely a hardware malfunction rather than a software malfunction. If the unit is out of warranty, the cheapest solution will be to use an external pointing device connected through a USB port. -
On most of these mouse touchpads, there are options to enable or disable tapping the pad to click. Check all of your mouse settings and the touchpad's settings(look for an icon in the system tray) to make sure that tapping to click is enabled.
-
Where is the system tray...How I can exucute that system? Where is the Device manager? How I can acces this Device Manager?
-
Never Mind Device Manager, System Tray.....Thanks Serenityconsulting and Celticchrys for your advice and instructions. With your experience and desire i was able to resolve this touch pads issues Thanks again........Primetime1

Do I have to adjust something in my computer. The same thing happen when I'm chatting the window appear and I can read whatever they said but when I try to move the mouse to the window to write something it just disapear go to the botton of the screen
-
Hey guys, yeah I think it's Fn + one of the F keys to enable/disable the touchpad. That's one of the most useless "features" a laptop can come with...
Anyways, I see someone here was looking for reviews. I agree with the breakdown you guys gave, but if anyone wants an in-depth review, I've got a lot of info about mine on my blog, www.teknosophy.com
I'm surprised people are paying so much for these babies! I only paid $400 on ubid. They've raised the price since then... -
When I click for the control panel a window comes to the screen and disapear also when I'm trying to chat and moves the mouse to the window to write something the window disapear. What kind of adjustment I need to do anyone knows...Please some advice will be appreciated....Thanks

Just a FYI. Do not buy the extended 8 cell battery from the Averatec site for $150...
Buy it from Provantage for $85! http://www.provantage.com/averatec-na203125-01~7AVTA005.htm -
I recently bought the extended battery. It manages to extend battery life to almost 4 hours if just doing basic web browsing or word processing. If watching a DVD or doing intensive work, you may be lucky to get 2 hours. The battery does add noticeable weight, but only slightly.
I set the power plan in Vista to "balanced" at 70% LCD brightness. You can possibly get into the 4-5 hour range by dimming the LCD further and choosing the "power saver" setting. In the real world I'm doing some browsing and watching a few videos every time I'm on the computer so I usually get ~3 hours. Decent, but could be better with some tweaking. I believe the AMD processors use more power than the Intels.

Nice !!! Thanks for the pictures and review

2500 series on sale for $499 at microcenter.com
nice price for this averatec IMO
nice extended battery btw.. -
I just picked up an Averatec 2500 series. What a great machine! Only $475 at MEI Micro Center, or less if you sign up for their coupon plan.
The reason for my posting is this: Have any of you tried Linux on this notebook? Any recommendations? I have an ASUS EEE with Ubuntu, and am happy with everything but the size of the screen. Any recommendations? -
I purchased this laptop too. But I am having difficulty finding a non-OEM power adapter. I searched ebay using 19v, 65w, 3.42a as keywords and found possibly compatible adapters listed for gateway liteon, toshiba m115 and acer. Does anyone know if they will work with averatec?
-
I purchased one from BestBuy it was a Targus universal one that is rated at 90watts and has the universal plugs that you can switchout. Remember that you will need to purchase a power adapter that is rated a MINIMUM of 65watts so 90watts and above will work too. I hope this helps. God Bless -
do any of you guys know how to upgrade the memory on the 2500 series model?

i woud like to know this as well
-

Hello all. Anyone know where I can get a replacement keyboard for a 2500 series? Here's the long story if you're interested...
I bought one of these last year and loved it so much that I bought two more ... for my mom and girlfriend. Well, here's the deal. All of us love these beauties, but I accidentally knocked a beer over on mine. I know... stupid. No liquid fell below the keyboard and actually very little fell at all (I caught it half way).
So here's the deal. Enough got on a few keys that they were slow to come up. I pulled the keyboard off and cleaned it with plain water. Air dried for 2 days and reassembled. Several keys didn't work, so I assumed I broke the membrane getting it out (it had adhesive under each side and wouldn't come out easy).
I looked around and can't find a replacement keyboard anywhere. Not even from my wholesaler in China. So I found some article stating that the MSI PR200 is the same computer and looked it up. MSI PR200 - Reviews, Prices, Photos, Videos - Laptop Computers
I took a shot in the dark and bought a keyboard for that model hoping it would work since I know 'someone' made the computer other than Averatec. The keyboard came today and doesn't work right. The circuits must be designed different even though the ribbon is the same and the keyboard is identical.
So I have everything working on mine but the '7' key and I'm going to soak in distilled water tomorrow again. Cross your fingers... but I'm sure I need a new one. Even if I get it working I'd like to know who made this and a model number so I can get other replacement parts if needed. I might buy a few extra keyboards just in case ;-) -

You might check out Fremontek.com, Your Reliable Source for Laptop Service & Parts, which sells spare keyboards for at least older Averatec models; I don't know if they carry any for the 2500 series. This company performed warranty work for Averatec in years past, but I don't think they do anymore.

Thank you for the link. I should have mentioned I looked there already. Their site was linked to from the Trigem site. They have keyboards for 2100-2300 series but nothing listed for 2500.
I did some google searching for the part numbers on this keyboard. The model number listed is MP-06833US-3596 which turns up nothing, but I did find a MP-06833US-359 used on the Averatec 2100/2150 and MSI S260.
I'm going to try and call Trigem and see if those keyboards are the same or different. Other numbers on the keyboard are the P/N: S1N-1UUS261-C54 which the Averatec 2100/2150 should be S1N-1UUS251-C54 ... so I'm guessing they are different pinouts or something.
The barcode has part number K806KB342472 which turns up nothing on google either. I can't imagine that no one makes this keyboard, but I'm starting to worry that might be the case.
I will post back here with my results... anyone else that wants to join in, feel free. -
Thought I would post this information in case it can help someone else down the line.
I called Fremontek and they don't have the keyboard in stock. They actually seemed like the didn't know that model existed. Then they asked if I wanted to send it in for them to replace the keyboard. This struck me as odd since they didn't have it in stock. They said they could special order it, but would not sell it to me.
OK, plan B. I called the vendor that made the MSI keyboard I had purchased, Chicony. They told me they haven't made laptop keyboards for 6 years. I think they were blowing me off.
Plan C, called Averatec/Trigem customer service. First, the referred me to Fremontek. Then they told me they had none in stock, but could sell me a used one from a demo machine. I made the deal and it's on the way. I think this was just good customer service since I purchased 3 of the laptops.
I had an interesting plan D though as well. I spoke with RK Computers, which is were I bought the MSI keyboard. He told me it should work if I can get my hands on the keyboard firmware for the MSI laptop that mine is based on. He also stated that Averatec is probably keeping an RMA buffer. Holding on to their inventory until the warranty period is up for the systems they sold. I suppose this makes sense and I hope it's the case. If I have to replace something on one of these machines down the road, I hope I can find the parts.
As a side note the CSR from Averatec/Trigem emailed me later in the day and said he had found a new one as well (I told him originally I wanted a spare just in case). After speaking with RK Computers I decided to wait and hold on to my $55. -

Something that has always picked my curiosity... Those of you with access to a Fry's Electronics knows this retailer has hundreds of keyboard styles in stock. I've noticed many "mini-USB keyboards" that appear to be nothing more than laptop keyboards mounted in an external USB case.
I don't know this, but suspect that all laptop keyboards from one manufacturerer use the same support chips/firmware. It only makes sense from a manufacturing standpoint. If I am also correct that these mini-USB keyboards are just remounted laptop keyboards, I am also guessing that one could be easily unmounted from the USB case to replace an identical layout keyboard in a laptop.
These mini-USB keyboards typically sell for much less than a laptop replacement keyboard.
