Have a friend who has this laptop. Has 512 RAM and AMD chip. I've heard some reports that XP sp 3 breaks AMD chip machines. This is the only net connection she has. Don't want to break it. Should I download sp3 for her?

    Thanks.

It's mostly AMD HP and Compaqs that suffered, but as long as you update fully prior to the service pack it will not be an issue. Worst comes worst, if you have an XP CD handy, it's pretty simple to uninstall a service pack via recovery console.

I have never seen any problem with SP3, even with an older model such as 3150.

Thanks to both of you. I was just making sure. It's her only connection to the outside world. I'd hate to do something that breaks her computer.

    Thanks again.

I put XP Pro on my nieces 3200. Fine. Put SP2 on. Fine. Put SP3 on. Aaargh! Killed it! I've now reverted to SP2 again but I'd prefer to be bang up to date.

    Any ideas?

Could you tell me more please Hep, thanks.

I would try installing XP with SP3 integrated, sometimes this makes all the difference in the world.
Also, make sure you've updated fully before installing a service pack, that can also make a difference.

As for uninstalling a service pack:

    Scroll down to method 4.

Try a fresh install of windows. It might not be the notebook but the software that is preventing SP3 from being installed.
