I'm getting an averatec 3360 because i think i offers the best bang-for-your-buck. I like the portability, as that's the first thing i look for in a laptop, as well as the dvd burner. I LOVE the card reader and internal wifi, which i both use on a regular basis.
However, it has come to my attention that averatec laptops have trouble with their chassises. Exactly WHAT happens to the laptops (where do the cracks appear?), and does this laptop suffer from the same problem? I would hate my latop to crack in any way...
What do you guys think? And if it CAN crack, do i get it anyways? (hint: i have an ebay account!!!)
^
that's what i had originally posted. My last post is nice and short... as well as recent.

If you tell us your budget and what you paln to dom we can help you better? My personal opinion is that there are better brands than Averatec in the same price range.
I know things, things that could get me killed
Thinkpad T41:
* 1.6Ghz Pentium M * 768Mb Memory * 40Gb Hitachi 7200RPM * Panasonic UJ-845-B DVD+RW * -
for 1300 with 3 year warrenty and will be used for photos, music, papers, surfing... what do you think is better?

OK well i decided to get the averatec... the price is perfect. only thing is, im stuck between the 3270 and 2360... the big decision is centrino VS sempron... which offers more power/is faster and which has more battery life? and by how much?
BTW whats the video card on the 3270? -
VIA Unichrome/S3. The video is not bad for being shared memory, but it's not phenominal either. It plays DVD and clips just fine. I wouldn't use it for high frame rate gaming, though.
Several people here complain of cracking and there's a big discussion on it on another thread, but my wife had the 3220 as her main system and she's a fulltime student so you can imagine the minimum abuse the system would see. It's scuffed up pretry good. We haven't seen crack one and the only complaint is with regards to the crummy winXP home that's preinstalled on it. I've got XP pro on the 3270 (update on the driver thing on the appropriate thread) and it is running like a champ. No svhost errors and other garbage, starts up very fast (especially when coming out of hibernation), everything is much more responsive...from a usability standpoint, that is. Of course the obvious things are faster due to the improved memory and proc speed, but everything is much more solid.
I'll let y'all know if things start degrading like they did with the other, but I install XPpro on all the notebooks at work (we use about 45 of them in the lab of various age, configurations, and manufacturer) and they always run sooooo much more stable than anything we've had in with XPhome.
The 3270 drivers are now up on the averatec support site, so you should be able to do whatever you want to the system now wtihout worrying about whether or not you're going to be able to get it up and running in short order.
Once she gets her data and settings fully migrated to the new system, I'll report back on how the refreshing of her old 3220 went and what direct improvements there were over XPhome.

thank you so much!
I think I'm gonna go for the 3270 then. I'm a student, too (last year of high school, getting the laptop this summer...JOY!), but it will become my main computer. I'm not really worried about the processing power... I've managed with a pentium 3 700 mhz for 5 years now... I will be using it basically for everything, but only a little light gaming.
About the graphics card: Is the graphics card on the 3270 better than the intel integrated graphics 2? and what about better than the ati rage 128 (on desktops...it's kinda old, i know, but i've managed)?
Battery life: How's the battery life with the computer on a slowest setting?
Other: Does it have AveraPlay and AveraBrite?
I'm really impressed with the computer. I tested one yesterday and was really happy with the feel of the laptop as a whole... -
See other posts on how I compare the feel of my wifes 3220/70 compared to my HP pavilion zd5460. I like working on it better even though it's a little underpowered for my regular work. If I go to a hotspot, I take my wife's notebook because it's about half the weight. Mine is intended for a desktop replacement that I can move around the house. I would never think of packing it ANYWHERE offiste.
The 3220/70 video is better than the Intel extreme that I've seen on any of the systems in the lab. We run a lot of emachines because they're cheap and all they have to do is provide life support for cards we're working on. They ALL have Intel Extreme Graphics in them, which I must say is anything BUT extreme. Shared memory is still shared memory and it's sort of reminiscent of the days when L2 cache used to be on the motherboard instead of buried in the proc die or on the daughter card... We have a couple that we upgraded the RAM in and they do builds OK but definitely not what we owuld have purchased in the first place if we'd known we were going to use some of them for that.
There's some Dells and IBM machines that have the Intel extreme graphics on them too and they're dogass slow as hell as well. You will get no framerate outta those puppies. VIA seems to be doing a better job with embedded graphics, that I've seen. NVIDIA and ATI provide combo chipsets mostly so they can sell into the value lines, none of them are worth much either.
I can play Carmageddon2 on the 3220 with decent effects and soundtrack playing and not be skipping frames (only 256MB RAM and 32MB shared out to video). I don't think you can ask much more out of it.
I haven't had time to check out my HP's capabilities, but it shoudl be much better with 64MB dedicated graphics memory. The thing is a freaking giant lead brick, though, that's for sure. A lead brick with great onboard sound, but a brick nonetheless.

Thank you aagain for your response!
There is now no doubt in my mind: a great price for aa great laptop.
Can anyone provide me with a sisoft sandra processor benchmark result for the 3270? I'd like to see how much faster it is than a few of my current machinnes... thanx!
Averatec 3270-->YAY!Now does any1 have benchmarks?
