I just got an Averatec 5428. The BIOS keeps loosing it's settings and I have to reset the clock whenever I put it away for a short time. If I leave it plugged in everything is OK. Has anybody ever replaced the battery and if so where is it located. Is there such a thing as a service manual I could download that tells me how to get this damn thing apart. And besides that they say you can upgrade the memory to 1Gig but where is the memory located? Thanks for the help. , Howie

Battery and memory replacement should be covered in the manual. There are most likely two memory slots, one on the underside of the laptop and one under the keyboard. The one on the underside of the case should be easily accessible. The one under the keybaord probably will require you to take off the case which may have ramifications for your warranty. May want to consult with Averatec on this. Good Luck.

Here's the deal. I took all the screws out of the bottom of the case and still couldn't get the friggin thing open. The keyboard has a top cover over it that has 2 screws. I took them out and some other metal shields and could find the battery by keeping the right side, top and bottom pried open. I removed the battery and checked the voltgage and the meter read 3.0 volts, so a dead battery it isn't. I did notice that the bottom contact was pushed down all the way (neg. side) so I pried that up a little and reinserted the battery. Everything is put back together and I'm testing that as we speak. The memory is also under the small metal shield under the keyboard, along with the wireless card. Both banks of memory are there. The laptop came with 512mb, and they put in 2, 256mb chips so if I want to upgrade I'd have to get 2, 512mb sticks. But I'm more concerned about the battery right now, and I'll post when the testing is complete. Thanks again for the info. Howie
