I recently got an averatec 6110 and I seem to have a problem with it. I can turn it on and it works fine until I tilt it backward or sometimes just move it in general. I don't know if it is overheating or what. I shuts of they same way on battery power or just the power cord. This morning I picked it up and it didn't shut off right away. I opened and closed it and flipped it around, set it on the desk and moved it around. For about 40 mins it was fine. Then I was checking something on the internet I dont know if i moved it or not but bam it shut off. I then have to remove the battery if it is connected and put it back in order to turn it back on or if it is plugged in I have to unplug it and plug it back in.
    Any ideas?

To update I have had the laptop on for that 1 and half and tilted it back with no problems. It is just plugged into the wall on battery in the laptop. Could it be the battery that is causing the problem?

so another update. With no battery plugged just the cord it turns off. When I tilt it to the back right corner of the laptop. Only to the backright it turn off. If i tilt it to the backleft nothing happens. I'm kind of thinking now that the HDD is the cause. Could that be the problem? Could tilting the laptop cause enough torque to the HDD to cause it to turn off or does it sound like an issue with the board it self.

HD are not affected by position.

The 6100 series is built by Uniwill model 258SA2. With the difference being video ram. DO NOT LOAD THE UNIWILL BIOS. WILL LOSE VIDEO IF YOU DO. Averatec will not sell parts. Uniwill will. The most expensive item is the LCD.

There are 3 common problems with the 6100 series.
    1. The socket for charging the battery comes loose, bad solder job.
    2. Over heating.
    3. And several reports of the plastic cracking, base and lid. Cracked LCD's, bad lid design. This was corrected in later models, different lid and brackets? (just ordered parts for mine).

The Overheating happens when the cooling systems gets plugged with lint. And the factory thermal past is junk. There is a post with instructions on how to remove the heat pipe, clean and apply Artic SIlver 5.

If you system shutdowns instantly, Non windows shutdown. It has to be due to a bad connection either with the battery, or ac adapter. The power system is a seperate board attached to the MB. Make sure both cooling fans are running, cpu, video. If you want to test it for heat. Use Prime 95 torture test.

There is a sensor on the lid to detect when the lid is closed, to execute a windows sleep or hibernation.

I replaced my HD after it was out of warranty. Moved up to the 7200 rpm drives.

I would re-seat the ram. With no ram the bios will not post.

I hope this is enough to get you started.

I was reading a few other forums and one guy said that they talked to averatec and they were going to fix the power adapter that was malfunctioning because it happen quite often. That sounds like the bad solder job that you talked about. Do you think that they would fix it for free or is it to old now.

Averatec may, depending how far it's out (1-2 mo). But their tech support service is BAD BAD BAD. A 2 yr old could to better. They have the worst tech I have ever had to deal with. They damage more than the fix. I would not send them anything. They only know one thing to say " Send it in and we will take a look at it". Then you are out $50+ in shipping charges.

I have the service manual for the 6100 series. Run CPU-z and confirm you have the 258SAx MB. It is labor intense to get to the board. I checked/re-soldered mine about 6mo ago. Took me 2+ hrs to do. If you have any soldering skills. Only requires a philips screwdrivers.

The model is a 255KI. Does the service manual tell you how to disassemble the laptop. So did that fix your problem.

Yes to disassembling the laptop. But apparently mine is different than yours. Who was the mfg? If Uniwill contact their tech support, they will send you the service manual FREE.

I did mine before there was any problems, preventive maintance. I just ordered the parts form Uniwill to correct the warped and cracked lid. I Did not order the base, that was cracked. After disassembling the 6130 I discovered it was only cosmetic, besides the super glue fused the plastic. And has no impact on the operation of the laptop.
