I've had my Averatec 6130HS-20 for a good 5 hours now, and I have reinstalled Windows XP Professional w/ SP2. The internal wireless card has really horrible problems. I have downloaded drivers from Ralink, Windows Update, Averatec - i've even tried the drivers from the third recovery cd (the wireless card worked perfectly with windows xp home (sp1) that shipped with it). The computer detects the wireless network, but the connection is weaker, and I cannot connect to the network. At this point i don't know what to do other than to buy a new wireless card. Not using Service Pack 2 is not an option.

    -Andrew

PS. Yes i made sure i turned on the internal wireless with the button at the top of the keyboard.

I installed SP2 last night and haven't had any real problems with the wireless. I noticed when I booted up this morning, it kept saying "not connected" but when I went to view the wireless networks avail. Mine was listed, and showed connected.... I couldn't get a connection for about 1 min, then all the sudden I was online. The whole time the icon showed disconnected. After a reboot everything seemed fine. Im on it right now.

i would try the ralink drivers again, make sure you use the 11g version, others myself included have much better performance with the ralink drivers, plus the controlling software (could be better though) has more card controlling options.

Im on XP Home. All with the preinstalled stuff from averatec. Right now I am sitting on my bed, very wireless lol and the wireless icon in the task bar shows disconected but I am online!! I think It started when I installed Sp2.

I'm using SP2 on xp home with the ralink drivers from www.ralinktech.com with no problem. I don't drop and have a much stronger connection with my d-link router then i did with the original drivers from averatec.

    All -

Even before I purhased my 6130, I was having all sorts of wireless issues on my PC at home since the advent of sp2. Its my understanding and experience that the security settings that are a major part of XP sp2 are causing all sorts of problems for folks systems all across the board. Proof of that is the simple fact the everything is great BEFORE sp2 is configured...then it goes to crap after.

Can't really blame Averatec(would be nice if the image were updated), or Ralink...although I do hope Ralink updates their drivers soon. I have personally downloaded every driver from the manufactures and included that as part of my CD arsenal...because sp2 is required and it's a pain. I've done this with my desktop and other systems i've built, and it takes the misery out of a OS reinstall

Admittedly, the wireless is not as strong or worry free before sp2, it does work..proof is that im writing on it now...+60 feet and 4 walls away from the access point.

I posted a link to the most up to date Ralink driver a few weeks ago. If you havent tried that, give it a go...it MIGHT help.

    Cheers!

Most ppl don't know is that you don't need sp2! Service Pack 2 is Microsofts lame attempt at a more secure operating system.

    *Install a good 3rd party...

Firewall (Sygate, ZoneAlarm, Symantec, F-Secure ...)
    Antivirus (Symantec, F-Secure, Mcafee ...)
Spyware agent (Adware, Giant AntiSpyware ...)

...and XP will run faster/cleaner than with sp2 installed.

    Adwolf2-

Please report your findings...i'd really be interested to see if its helpful. I man consider doing the same.

I have read in whitepaper docs that MS is going to begin to "force" the sp2 on xp boxen at some point.
