I got my 7100 just over a year ago. After having this awesome laptop for about 6months, red squares, like legos, would slowly cover my screen until i couldn't see anything. I would shut it down (by holding down power) and power it back up so i can continue using it. I called Averatec and they said that it was "getting too warm" so i purchased a notebook cooling pad. this did no good, the only thing it did was take up a USB port. Averatec support was not helpful and was trying to blame it on "customer installed software" and would not help me. Now, i have had my laptop for just over a year and it died completely. just the little blue light comes on, nothing else. no harddrive spin up, no fans or any flicker on the screen.... she's dead. Averatec said that it is out of warranty now and refuses to help me at all. This kind of support makes me wanna advoid Averatec in the future and not recomend them to others.
I had a friend look at it and he swapped out the memory, CPU and the harddrive and the same thing, its dead. He said that the motheboard is toast and somehow i need to come up with a new one. i dont want to fork up $1000 for a new laptop every year! Has any one else had this problem? is there a quick unexpensive fix? Since Averatec has been so unhelpful for me, i was hoping that someone here would fill in their job for them.
Thanks a million!

There is never a quick fix for a motherboard failure, and I'm sorry to hear about your trouble.
In this case, I would recommend you consider contacting your credit card company and initiating a charge-back. Reason: Failure on the manufacturer's part to honor the warranty. On that alone, you could contact a lawyer and sue them as well...but I do not now how feasible this would be.
Keep a record of all contacts and complaints with Acer you had, in order to prove that you did complain about the problem and they refused to render aid. Just in case anyone needs that info.
But for now, I suggest you consider purchasing a more rugged laptop from another company. -
if you're adventurous, you could take it apart and check the continuity of the fuse on the motherboard. it's likely near the power connector.

Thanks, i will give it a try. i dont see how a fuse can make red squares go away from my screen, but it may get it running at least. I took part of it apart and didn't see anything visually wrong but i couldnt' figure out how to get the whole bottom cover off. Ill keep you guys updated. Also, i started going though my archived emails looking for the emails and responses from Averatec support. Thanks for the hellp guys!!

Hello again guys! The legacy continues. I took it to a repair place, and they charged me $319 to repair the board. It took them nearly a month to send my notebook back to me. The notebook worked fine for about 29days until it died again with the same problem. I'm thinking of parting it out and selling the pieces on eBay.... It's time for me to buy a Pro-star.

Welcome to world of Averatec. Sorry you're having the typical Averatec horror story. I would have pushed much harder on Averatec, especially while it was still under warranty. The Southland BBB would have been the place to go and lodge a complaint. That seems to be the only place Averatec payed any attention to. I got mine fixed finally through a complaint to them and also to the Cal. Attorney General's office.
As to parting it out, I'd still go after the folks that just fixed the unit. They have to have some form of guarantee for their work. Remember, it's the most sqeaky wheel that gets the oil. Just tell them, "You don't have to take it anymore". Then complain to everyone that'll listen.

When I first found Averatec laptops, about 4 years ago, they were great. Then I stopped being able to get tech support. Now, after having 3 of their laptops I have quit looking at them. They are now under the name of TriGem Computer Inc.
The last two laptops developed the problem of going into Sleep mode automatically. When I first contacted Averatec support they told me it was necessary for Sleep mode to operate because users didn't know how to handle laptops and there was no way to disable it.
The last time I contacted them was because the laptops would not wake-up from Sleep mode. I was told that since Averatec was under re-organization that there was no longer any tech support available for my laptops.
Averatec no longer even provides FAQs for this Sleep problem and they do not provide manuals or information for their products online.
All I can say is " STAY AWAY from TriGem Averatec Products
