I'm almost ready to purchase my first lappy. I'm just about sold on the 6100 series, but i've not HANDLED one, so i'm not sure about the durability. I'm lookimg to this forum in hopes you Averatec users can give me some opinions on how well built they are.

    Thanks for your input!

Just a side note, I have read thru much of this fourms postings to help solidfy my decision. Alos, can anyone comment on the 6100 ability to have the DVD/CD rom upgraded to a DVD burner? The modle i'm looking at specificly does not include a DVD burner...but if possible, i'll just add that hardware to my purchase and install it myself.

    Continent,

Good question. Simply, the model i've found available on-line so far is the 6130h1. Also, i could get an external DVD burner for rather cheep if necassary.

    Thanks for the reply.

Newegg.com has it for 1169 USD

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=34-149-010&depa=3

I did find the HS on buy.com for 1287 USD

    http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10379201&loc=101&hdwt=0&sp=1

I'll probably go with the HS...but i'd still like some feedback about this manufactures durability...anybody?

    Thanks again!

I have read that review already. What I really am looking for is folks own opinions on how well built their Averatec lappys are.

You've given me some good feedback...but i'm still fishing for info.

I own the 6130H, and I used a compaq presario 700 before. The averatec is far sturdier than the compaq. I had problem with the hinges on the compaq, the plastic cracked and the hinges got loose. I sold it before it would break down appart.

No need to mention I was concerned on the solidity of the hinges of this unkown brand. But as soon as I've opened it, I felt they were great. And they are still great after a while of use. The plastic in general has a good feeling, and I don't think any part of it would break before anything else. Ports are generally well placed (depends on your taste, too). It is quite slim if you consider what's inside, but IT IS heavy.

Ok just got back from MicroCenter and the price of a 6210 is $899 if you sign up for their credit card. It looks nice but I'm a girl - what about durability? I'll be waiting around too to see what people have to say. Thanks ahead of time to any contributors. Liz

    Thanks again wipeout!

It's nice to know that Averatec is using quality products in their build.

Looks like i'm definately going to purchase a 6100 today, in part to the info presented in this forum. I think i will stick around and provide feedback (or just lurk) since this seems to be a good group of folks.

    "...looks nice but I'm a girl..."[ :D]

Funny, That would tell me that it has style!

Liz, if ya dig around in the forum (like i bet you already are) you should find some good info. The feedbcak seems to be that the 6100 series is a rather good desktop replacement...but not to hot for a portable due to its massive processor. If battery life is not a issue, then it seems like quite a steal...and for under a grand, DAMN, I wish I had a MicroCenter around here! [ :(]

    DamnageD,

I hear ya - know what you mean. I live in Upstate, NY and there's no Micro Center to be found anywhere. Luckily, I've been commuting to Detroit for a few months now, and a few miles from where I stay is a MicroCenter. I find myself in there, more than I need to be! I actually prefer them over CompUSA now. Seem to have a bigger selection on most things, and a much better return policy. Although I did not buy my 6130 from them, I believe that's where I first saw it. Friendly, and knowledgeable staff as well. At least the Troy, MI store.

    Later,

It's a good laptop, strong build quality. For a 4200rpm hd it's pretty good. Played BattleFront at good quality. Highly recomened notebook.

Well, just as an FYI...i have ordered the 6130H1 added a gig of Kingmax RAM and a external DVD burner ( yes I know it is available thru some vnedors witha DVD burner...but its all being done online thru Newegg.com who i trust completly).

I am not yet going to upgrade the Hd until I can also get my hands on XP pro. In the meantime, is anybody having issues with XP home SP2? I may just start a new post on this question...but WTH, can't hurt to ask.

"Don't upgrade your HD in hotel room without your software tools - and your master CD's"

    one word...(no disrespect intended)...DUH!

Besides that, i'm not too supprised about the wireless driver not working well with SP2. After reviewing these forums, i have done one thing...i DLing all the drivers from the Averetec site to cd and save that sucker just in case!

redjr..ya want a copy for your travles? Just kidding!

Yea, it was pretty stupid, but I get these projects in my head and since I have nothing better to do at night I tackle them. The four walls of a hotel start to close in after a while and there's only so much 'Hardball' I take - if you know what I mean. Of course, I should be used to it, having done it most of my adult life! Now there's a scary thought..

Anyway, overall the project went as expected, except for the Office XP fiasco. But I recovered. I'll make sure everything is back to normal after I get back home this weekend. Hum, wonder if I should install Linux tonight....[ ;)]

Have you made up your mind on the 6130 yet? Just curious.

    redjr,

Yes i've made a decision...i have purchased a 6130, and am paiently (barely) waiting its delivery.

I too will likely move to a dual boot XP/Linux partitioned drive as well. I need to figure Linux out...I also need another hole in my head.[ ;)]

    DamnageD,

Yea, now I remember you did mention it in an earlier post. I was only about half serious with Linux. I have installed it before as a dual-boot option on my desktop at home, but never seemed to have enough time to really mess with it a great deal. I've tried just about every distro out there too. I even tried Red Hat and Lindows when they first came out. I think Mandrake is the best for a dual-boot configuration, as well as including every imagineable Linux tool in the distro. I think they're up to version 10 now.

I suppose I may get around to loading it on my 6130 at some point, now that I have a larger drive I can re-configure to include a Linux partition. I'll just be sure not to attempt it some lonely night in the hotel room! Setting up a dual-boot can be tricky, especially if you later want to remove it. I've done it anough times to know!
