    Hey there,
Alright, so my friend convinced me a while back to get a cheapish ($780) ECS barebones notebook - after about 5 months the plastic around the screen started to crack on the bottom left and right corners. I eventually realized it was pressure from the screws that are supposed to stabilize it - as if they were too big, or in the wrong spot. Eventually they broke right through and then pieces of plastic would get stuck all over the place. Eventually this ended up loosening everything and the power outlet pin got loose so I had to tap it to make it work. Then it just stopped powering up, the battery died, and now it won't turn on.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

I called support right away and they were totally unhelpful - told me to take it to a local computer store! What were they going to do? Glue the casing back together?!?!? I gave up eventually, but I am mad. What a waste of money.

that sucks....do you by any chance have a picture of your notebook? i think ecs used uniwill barebones but i'm not sure. it may also help if you tell us the model number on the back. you may still be able to order parts directly from the manufacturer. although if there is something wrong with the power outlet pin, there could be a problem with the motherboard....which means you might mean it will probably be better to just get a new notebook rather than spending money fixing your system.

ECS is ECS, I don't think they used any Uniwill models and I think some of those "GQ" line Frys sells is built on ECS whitebooks.

i've heard many horror stories about ECS. There was one guy who bought it and had hte plastic warp on him. ECS gave him a replacement unit free of charge, but the plastic on that one too was of poor quality. keyboard flexed greatly as well as the lid.

My advice to all newbees: don't save money on your first lappy by bying a cheapish barebone based notebook. The risks are too big.

I also consider my first purchase of a notebook as a wasted money (well, my first one was actually mac, but i didn't like it for many reasons including the price, so I returned it back to apple shop, but the uniwill barebone I bought was money and nerves consuming crap I started to hate even though it was actully working well after all the returns and replacements).

I was sorta thinking the same thing. Lol. Then again, I guess I'm kind of poor.. so...

I'm sorry to hear that though, Katie. Someone remind me in the future to not buy things from ECS if they're that terrible.
