I'd like to build my own GL-30, but I'm having some difficulty figuring out the differences between the VBI and non-VBI versions. The only thing I've discovered so far is that the non-VBI version is supposed to include the 9 cell battery. The other thing that is stumping me is whether or not the optical disk drives are interchangeable between the two. Can someone shed some light on the subject?

Hi jbbenson. Welcome to the forums and especially the Compal forum.

Are you talking about the VBI HEL80?

If we are talking about the HEL80, here are the main differences. In my opinion, it's worth it to pony up the little extra money to get the extra features/styling.

Here are the differences between the Compal HGL30 and VBI GL30.
GL30 has 6 cell battery and dark gray lid.
HGL30 has 9 cell battery and teal lid.
They both use standard laptop optical drives.
