Hi, I own a Compal Hel-80, and I was wondering if I could plug-in the battery while the laptop is on? Can I remove the battery while the laptop is on?
    Thanks a lot

I assume you mean while the laptop is on A/C power.

Why would you want to do that?

Well, sometimes I remove my battery to store it, but I hate rebooting when I need to be more mobile and I forgot to put the battery in before starting up.

What would be the best way to get the most out of your battery in terms of life span... leaving it in all the time, charging it and removing it, and only using it when away from an outlet or what?

I've personally been using laptops for years and I never take the battery out unless it is dead and I'm putting another in (I normally have several batteries for each laptop) My batteries tend to be good for about 1.5+ years. I've still got the original battery from my inspiron 8100 which is going on 4? years now. I've also purchased a second battery for the notebook(they could use two at a time for 6-8 hours of life) that only lasted maybe 2 years that I recently replaced.

I also never remove the battery. It just seems like too much of a waste of time for me. I know it would prolong the overall life of it somewhat, but I'd rather just buy another one every couple years or so.

I actually have a notebook from 1999 with two batteries and its batteries still have some decent life in them--not a lot of degradation in 7 years. Of course, not a lot of use either since about 2000-2001 ;).
