    Cheers

edit: just read the posts (it does help lol)
'Some guy that work on BIOS
for Compal send it to someone, & that person distribute it on rapidshare
. AFAIK this BIOS is not final release so yes, VT may not work as it should & yes, DEP is enabled.'

What is the difference between 1.18 and 1.16? The latter was pre-installed on my JFL92 and I haven't bothered to change it as a mistake here is costly and I need this laptop right now.

Did any of you guys check what's inside of these BIOSes from lv2go. Seems like it's 1.12version. Atleast in one of them. No wonder some of you have problems.

I tried to update my BIOS from the one on Compal's website, v 1.18 I think, anyway I wasn't able to do it.

I run the .bat and the window pops up with an error message about can't run with memory management running ,ie: EMM386, etc. I don't have any of that running that I can tell.

I tried running it from my HD in normal and safe mode, and from a USB thumb drive in normal and safe mode, but still get the error message.

There wasn't a text file that explains how to flash the BIOS, so I not sure what went wrong.

What do I need to do? :confused2:

    Thanks,

    Mike

Now, I could very well be wrong but.... your description makes it sound like you are trying to run it in Windows... maybe?

    Are you?

(Note: All my BIOS upgrades were done with FreeDOS and worked without a problem.)

check this out, it's ready and waiting to be used.
Keep in mind it's your own risk to flash the BIOS.

    BIOS 1.18: http://download.bto.eu/Notebooks/PR...W25A-15W26+ (JFL90 + JFL92)/BIOS/JFL92118.zip

    USB-STICK BOOT SOFTWARE: http://download.bto.eu/Tools/USB-KEY BOOT SOFTWARE.zip

Just unzip install the tool, go to the folder drivekey, unzip the file HPUSBFW, run the tool (HP USB-STICK BOOT SOFTWARE) point the utility to get the BOOT files form the HPUSBFW folder which is unzipped and start the format.
Copy the downloaded BIOS file to the USB-STICK and unzip the file with the short name 1.18.
Run the xxxxxxxx.bat file and everyhting should be fine.

All BIOS update's from compal ready to be used trought DOS by running the *.BAT file.
There is no final release for version 1.19, that's maybe the reason it will not work.

Yes. There were NO BIOS update directions with the file, so i thought I could just run it from windows. I tried the way I updated my wife's laptop, but that didn't work either, so I came here.

My approach to BIOS updates is that unless the hardware vendor explicitly says the update can be run in Windows, I would not run the update in Windows. And even if the vendor says I can update in Windows, I'd still prefer a DOS-based procedure over a Windows based one.

The governing principle for BIOS updates is "keep it as simple as possible to prevent the risk of failures". Because if a failure occurs in the middle of flashing the BIOS, you run the risk of turning your machine into an expensive brick. DOS is much simpler than Windows and DOS will let any program under it take over the control of the machine. Windows does not allow that. Overall, DOS is much less likely to interfere with the update. It is just safer.

I tried to update my IFL 90. I made a USB bootable disk and put in all the files and typed in phlash16 xxxxx.wph (xxxxx was the name of the wph file). I get the error "Can't flash while memory managers are present (HIMEM)"
Anyone know how to get past this?

    Edit:
Just to make it clear. I did boot my computer of the USB disk. I didn't run the wph file in Windows.

I would go to the psychologist to get past traumatic events.

Hmm... but seriously what did you use to make your bootable USB disk?
