    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone here can offer some suggestions as I seem to be having a problem getting my new whitebook to boot.

I have tried installing the CPU I have (QX9300), RAM I have (Kingston 1066 SODIMM) and wifi card (Intel 5300). When I connect the power cable the power light goes on but when I try and boot the computer a few lights go on (the CPU light next to the HD light and also the power button light, while the CPU fan turns on, but screen is blank) and then it cuts out for a second or two and everything that was on turns off (apart from power cable light) then goes back on again (but screen is still blank) and pressing the power button does nothing and the only way to stop things is take the power cord out.

Is this normal? When I remove all the components (i.e. CPU, RAM, WIFI) the same thing happens so I am not sure if it is just the stock response of the system. I guess my questions are:

    1. Do I need to have the HD connected in order to even get something on the screen? I was under the impression I could start the computer without a HD and it would just tell me no disk to boot.

    2. What is the normal response of the system booting up without the optional components installed? Should I get the BIOS screen?

    3. Is there anyway to check individual components, i.e. if I start the system with no optional components I get what I see above but if I start with just the CPU I get Bios, then with memory as well I see it come up in bios, then HD detected etc? I'm just a little confused what's going on as it is hard to debug given that there is no information in the manual or anywhere else about troubleshooting..

    4. Do I need to update the BIOS to use the QX9300 chip? If so, how do I do that without another CPU?

Anyway hope someone can help as I want to get this thing up and running as it was stuck in customs for a couple weeks.. If there's any additional info needed let me know and I'll track it down..

Make sure you turned the screw on the CPU socket to lock the CPU into place.

    Thanks for your reply.

I bought the CPU from ebay, it is an ES chip. I'm not sure about stepping, how would I find that out? Would the QGNG label refer to this?

    Thanks for your help.

I agree, make sure the CPU is locked in. Also, where did you get the computer from?

One of your statements confused me.. you claim to be able to see the system boot, with the CPU, RAM, and HDDs installed? Or no?

It just powers up, then lights flash off, then it does it all over again? Hmm.. from what you describe, it sounds EXACTLY like what happened to my system when I bricked it with a BIOS flash. Everything would turn on, when plugged in.. drives and fans would spin up.. never saw ANYTHING on the screen. Then nothing would happen.. just lights, and fans, and spinning hard drives. Funny part, I couldn't turn it off via power button. If I held the power button, it would just restart and automatically power on. Only way I could power down was by unplugging the system. Anyhow, not sure if this is the exact same issue you're having..but I had to send mine in for replacement. Maybe your video cable is disconnected? Have you connected the output to a display to find out?

the video cable could be a issue.
E, do you think that you can flash it without seeing anything just ask someone what they see and how it took and then you do .

worth to try noob tip?: it would work using an external monitor? since the notebook lcd isn't working.
but then... bios is necessary to boot from a cd/etc which can be necessary to flash a bios.
Isn't there any bios reset button like in desktops?

there is a small reset button along the left edge of the computer..it's recessed, and barely visible until you look for it and notice it says "Reset". Not sure what it resets, but didnt reset my bad BIOS flash ;)

Thanks everyone for your help. It turns out the CPU was not in properly. I didn't want to damage the chip so I was overly cautious with screwing it in and turns out I needed to turn the screw further.. Silly..
