I just formatted my Compal HEL 80, and I came across a problem I never experienced before. Whenever I pull out the charger and start working on the battery, the brightness level of the display goes down. When I turn it up to 100%, and I plug in the charger again, the brightness level goes down again.

To me it seems like there is a default brigtness level *somwhere*, which is at ~50%. However, I don't want the brightness level to change depending on whether you work on the battery or charger. How can I change these settings?

I use RMClock to set the brightness levels, but it doesn't seem to work.

    Thanks.

It depends how you setup your system to work while on battery, balanced, power saving or high performance. If you set it up to balanced or power saving, the laptop will work with less brightness.

Its a good thing IMO. My XPS M1210 halves it brightness on battery to save power. I don't mind. It helps save your precious battery.

TC03, depending on your operating system, there are settings in your power management (right click on the battery/plug icon in windows) You should be able to set everything to max brightness there if you like.

@ Wirelessman: I know it does, but I changed the default RM Settings to 100% brightness levels period.

@ The_Punisher: I'm aware of that, but I think I can lower the brightness level myself when I want to save battery time, I don't need my notebook to do it for me.

@ Atook: I looked there, but I couldn't find anything regarding the brightness. I have WXP pro btw.

There is a setting in the nvidia control panel about that.

@ above: the settings in the nVidia menu doesn't help me. Maybe I overlooked?

I still haven't found a solution. Does anyone else have? Please, do tell!

Ackk, I can't think of one. I know in Vista I managed to change it, and thought I had in XP, but maybe not. Let us know if you do find a solution!

What version of RMclock are you using? I am using 2.25 on Win XP Pro and when I set the brightness to 100% in the RMclock profile, it stays at 100% when I pull the plug on the power.

I have a similar problem when going from AC power to battery power... I noticed the problem began around the time I upgraded my BIOS (ie. from 1.16 to 1.22/1.23) but it could just be a coincidence. Anyways, I've checked the BIOS configuration to see if there's an "auto dim" option like on my other laptop but to no avail I couldn't find one. I haven't downgraded my BIOS to see if my theory is correct but it's an option to try if your if you've exhausted all the other "solutions".
    Good Luck

I don't remember exactly since I installed Vista and it doesn't provide that option anymore as the os already does. It's in the powermizer options part of the nv control panel. I assume you have to enable the advanced options. One other thing you could do is look if you don't have a "lcd auto-dim" option in your bios.
