So here's the story. I accidentally dropped my HEL80 and now half the LCD screen is damaged and unviewable. I purchased my laptop a year ago from powernotebook and since it was my fault I dropped it, this is not covered by any warranty.

Powernotebook is telling me it's going to cost me $350 for the new screen +labor+shipping which is going to be in the ballpark of 500. Now the laptop is already a year+ old its current resale value is probably $700 if not lower.

I did some googling and found that other vendors were selling LCD screens for the Compal HEL80 for around $120-$150.

My question is how hard would it be to either install the new LCD screen myself or finding a local repair shop to install the new screen? Because at this point, although I love my laptop, I can't see myself paying that much money to get it fixed.

It's not hard at all. I 'm sure someone can tell you where to download instructions on how to do it yourself. I have them at home on my desktop, but that doesn't help you now. Just remember to unplug it and pull the battery before you start. I use the edge of a credit card to separate the bezel from the lid or top. It doesn't leave marks or scratches like a knife blade. I will post the instructions this weekend if no one else does it by then.

Lol I repaired mine twice in 1 month it is fairly easy, you can find panels on ebay for ~$100 depending on the resolution.

Thanks guys. I'll go ahead and get this fixed myself then. Just wanted to make sure if it was a easy thing or not. :)
