The fix reference number is kb918005. It worked for me removing that annoying noise at the cost of battery life. I think it's a microsoft issue.

In your earlier post you mentioned that you uninstalled this fix. Did you mean you installed it and it has removed the noise for you at the cost of battery life?

Also, are you referring to the noise coming from the left side of the keyboard or the one that is audible through the headphone mini-jack?

Yes it's the noise coming from the left side of the notebook. Also that high pitch buzz sound i was able to hear it louder through the speakers when i set the mic volume to max and enhanced the mic volume also.

When i bought my hgl30 i read a lot about this laptop. And i came across this fix (KB918005) for increasing battery life. Before installing it i didn't have any problems at all with the system working silently. Then i installed it and that noise appeared (the noise from the left side of the laptop). I tried uninstalling devices, and so on. But the noise was still there. Then i read somewhere that this noise could be from bad power management and try uninstalling this microsoft usb battery drain fix. I uninstall it and it was gone ! This is two days my laptop is working without this noise appearing. I'm not quite sure this is the right fix but till now there is no noise.

We've also been able to get rid of that noise (from the left side of notebook) by undervolting the CPU when on battery power. Using an application like RM Clock or Notebook Hardware Control will allow you to do so.

I'm not being defensive, but I just dont see what you are looking at... From all the machines I've used since the original version of RMclock, its never used more then a few % of CPU. This sort of application must remain active in order to do its job, so again, I do not understand your expectation, since the only way the program can work efficiently it has to actively communicate with the cpu.

If your installation of RMclock is using so much of your cpu that you can't enter lower power states, you either have a bad RMclock installation and should try uninstall/re-install to fix your copy.

    I read the notes here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918005

This mentions it doesn't fix devices with IRQ's like mice or keyboards plugged into the USB. It does mention it is a "fix" for people who use USB hubs that dont properly report items to the OS(Does not work with USB mice and keyboards), keeping the systems USB port that the hub is plugged into from entering a lowered power state, or keeping the system from entering C3/C4 (which you only get if your not using your notebook, and your wireless activity is low enough or off). (So this patch only applies if you have a USB hub)

Long story short, I'm not sure how this fixes noise unless you were using USB audio. The notes aren't specific enough for anything else.

pyro9219 , think you are right I'm not so familiar with the hardware. But the fact is: Without this update there is no noise for me, with this update there is noise. I'm not telling that this is a fix for the noise. I just give a suggestion if you have this windows patch installed, uninstalling it might fix your problem without other applications like RMClock and under-volting your processor. After all when i got rid of this noise i fully reinstalled my system and set all up working quietly. :)

Might be worth looking into.. Maybe Chrisyano can verify if this patch is / isn't installed on his system? I know its not on mine.

Don't forget Kocakov, many of us use RMclock to undervolt to also get more battery life, or use the power profiles to setup our own system speeds ;)

Yeah. I was bummed too. Part of me wants to believe that the fix was prepackaged with an automatic Windows update and not labeled. But I know better.

Just wondering if you believe me now that I see you have also asked about the CPU time consumed on the RMclock forum and you got the same answer from them... :p

But i thought chrisyano wasnt too bothered about the noise anyway (wich suggests to me that it isn't nearly as loud as the buzzing and noise im getting through my headphone output) how do i remove the KB918005 update ? (or even check if its installed) so i can test this phenomenon out on my system ?

Go to Add/Remove Programs, check the top at the top of the window for show updates, then check towards the bottom for a full list of security fixes and other patches to XP. It's not part of the automatic downloads, so you would have had to download it yourself.

Just wondering if anyone has tried to isolate EMI prone devices yet to fix their sound issues. (Like suggested towards the end of this thread)

Site or my comps acting funny, so I didn't do a search, but does muting the mic do anything to help with the noise, I know mine causes some noise if I have mic booster enabled or it at a reasonable input level. I'm just throwing it out as a thought. Hopefully I'll have one in the next week or so. also hopefully I won't run into this problem.

I can't say for a fact, but I'm going to say muting the mic won't help either of the known and posted problems with the systems. I'm also willing to bet that its effecting every system, but because of inconsistency of up to 20% for some hardware, we aren't all being effected enough to hear it...

(think of it, hardware can be upto 20% imperfect and still "pass", those with more parts closer to 20% will notice it more then people with more parts closer to 5% off)

I think that's a good assessment. If you search the forums for "high pitched" you'll find a lot of threads about all manufacturers' systems suffering from this same issue. And that's just using high pitched as a search parameter. I've seen a lot of threads about the same noise--as I mentioned before, I think it's a common issue with notebooks in general.
