The MX has shown up on CNET.com for some time now, but up until now it didn't have a real review, complete with their 10 point scale numerical rating. The review isn't very long and I doubt it says much that most of you don't already know. Anyway, they gave it a 7.4 out of 10.

My first thought is that it seems like a low score given that they appear to only find one thing to complain about. Any thoughts?

I read that too, and I agree, they didn't complain about it a whole lot and then gave it a 7.4 which is kinda low on their scale. I interpret that as a 74% on a test, and in most schools that's like a "D", or Below par. And as usual the review is kinda short, kinda high level and talks nothing about the company PortableOne and their extremely good customer service. Such a lack of personal touch in the review overall. I prefer user reviews that get posted on this site [ :D]

I must agree with abaxter's comment regarding the user opinions. I find it quite interesting that the user opinions, even the LOW ones, are all higher than cnet's overall rating. I was somewhat disappointed in cnet's lack of detail in their review. When i first went to read it, i kept on looking for a link to go to the "next page" of the review. [ :p]

I absolutely agree, per Cnet the MX performed just as fast as the Dell machine that had a 200MHz faster processor, while it yielded close to an hour more battery life than the Dell and an hour and a half more than the HPQ, Cnet also stated that the other machines with dedicated X300 graphics "performed only slightly better" in the video tests. All in all it was an accurate review but the score does not make any sense..

maybe you guys should read about what the 7.4 means (ahem, "very good"). it has nothing to do with a "d" average...in fact, cnet recently adjust their scoring down, so a 7.4 now is equivalent to a 8 point something of awhile back.

in fact, cnet likes the portable one...except for it's supposedly lackluster video performance.

As the user above says, 7.4 is a very high score on CNET's scale. Ratings have no meaning until they are given a scale. The majority of notebooks fall in the 5-6 range now with the 7's being the best ones and the 8's (hardly any now) being the exceptional ones (like the XPS2).

keep in mind too... reviews and advertising dollars go hand in hand... no one will ever admit it... but notice how high they rate Dell junk and the number of Dell ads....hmmmmm same with other obvious junk and ads....

this review shouldn't be applicable to the current MX. The past MX was the Asus M5. This year, the MX is an Asus W3V.. big difference.

I agree, the best Cnet reviews don't even compare to the worse (worse here meaning not the best on NBR, not meaning terrible) on NBR. Most Cnet reviews lack any sort of depth and seems to be a very rush-rush job and only includes the reiterations of the specifications of the notebook.

On NBR, the reviews are the most in depth from what I have seem. I wanted to write a review up for my W3V, but I am not sure what I could say different that from the other 3 reviews have said.

Here the reviews come from people who are the end users, not people trying to make other companies look better. When the 5G iPod was released. I looked at the reviews for it on Cnet and it gave it a 8.3 without it's editor's choice and then a few days later to my surprise it recieved to "coveted" Cnet Editor's Choice shield. That turned me off completely. I have no clue why they did this other than the obvious of being bias or someone nagging the reviewing to give it the Editor's Choice. Money is the cause to all this.

Honestly though who would reccommend some of the junk they would here. Dell's get higher reviews than most of their products. The Inspiron 5150 recieved an 8.3 with an Editor's Choice shield. I don't know how many of you have handled this Inspiron, but it is mostly a peice of junk. All the ones I have seen suffer from massive heat problems, resulting in fried motherboards or terrible screens. The M5 they reviewed had very little negatives in their review, but recieved a 7.4, it just boggles my mind. Money is the couse to everything, when it talks I guess people listen.

If they do this with iPods and such, it leads me to think that they do this to every "reviewed" item, such as their notebooks.

And don't even get me started about Molly Wood.
