    Hi,

I recently acquired a barebones Compal CY30 that I thought would make a handy portable. I bought a hard disk and some memory new, and grabbed an old P4 2.0 that I had lying around.

However, the laptop won't boot - the power and hard disk lights come on green, the CPU fans spin up, but go off again after about 3 seconds. The lights stay on until the battery/AC is removed. Nothing appears on the screen (although it does flicker briefly when the power button is first pressed).

I'm pretty sure that the P4 was working beforehand - although I don't have any other P4 boards around to test it in. However, the first time I tried the laptop, I hadn't turned the screw on the CPU socket - would this have damaged it?

Alternatively - does the fact that this is a non-M P4 make a difference?

Thanks in advance for any help - I've spent years building/repairing desktop systems, but laptops are still something of a black art as far as I'm concerned :)
