When I try to start it, it just says:

    Boot Failure
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device
    Press any key when ready

That's as far as it gets. I can do the thing where you press del but don't know if I can do anything in there. Is there a way to reformat the whole laptop without it getting farther than that? Any suggestions? I don't have a disk or anything...

Go into your bios and see if the HD is reconized.

You may have lost a HD.

Or Buy a copy of SpinRite from GRC.com and see if it can recover the HD.

If you have Windows NT / 2000 / XP, you can boot from startup floppy disks or CD-ROM, choose repair option during setup, and run Recovery Console. When you are logged on, you can run FIXMBR command to fix MBR.

Well, for whatever reason, the system is not seeing a working hard drive. Did this just happen all of a sudden or were there other problems leading up to this? If there are files, photos, other documents that you need to save, start thinking about doing this. The easy way is to get a Bart PE bootable CD (it is free) and an external usb drive. Boot with the Bart cd and copy anything you want to save over to the usb drive.
