well i cant say if they prices will change from what ocz was figuring but if they stay around the same price you will be very pleasantly surprised i think at least especially compare to the insane prices of nvidia cards. i dont really want to say more because im not sure how the new company will handle it yet compared to what ocz was guessing these would cost. and i do not want to give any wrong info out.

Cost of the 4870s in a new machine isn't going to be the same as the cost of upgrading. You got to figure in that you've already paid for two 3870 cards and a heatsink when you bought the original machine....as well as the possible extra cost for labor and shipping.

You might be able to recoup some of the cost by eBaying the 3870 cards but the end cost will still be more than what 4870s in a new machine will cost.

AW M17 owners may not even have that option....if they send in their laptops for upgrades do they get back the old cards or does AW keep them?

they wouldnt keep them you paid for them. unless there are going to deduct them from the cost of there 4870 then no. and knowing alienware or any company they are not going to do that because they will loss so much money.

make a poll to known if people think that they will be able to buy those 4870 since ocz will not supply them anymore and if they can what price people think it would be. I bet we won't be able to buy any 4870 and that alienware will have that exclusive. I also will sue my notebook vendor (that will eventually sue OCZ that will eventually sue Flextronics???) because I bought a notebook that suposely I could upgrade to use 4870.

You forgot Arima dude, LOL :D
IIRC, Arima made a deal with OCZ before they sold their laptop division to Flextronics.

Flextronics bought Arima before Arima lunched the W840DI (but I think Arima developed the notebook before they were bought).
Don't forget that Alienware had the exclusivity of Arima notebooks, including the "previous version" of the M17, the M9750. (also note that the 3870 of the M17 works perfectly on the M9750 and AW doesn't offer that option).

sue AW is an hard thing... they have a very nice team of lawyers to deal with their crappy quality and pseudo costumer service. anyway AW already stated that the M17 will be able to upgrade to the 4870 although no ETA. their quality can be questionable but they are not stupid. I think AW will be able to get 4870 they deal directly with flex. ofc they won't sell to any1 that does not own a AW notebook.

yup they sure will and they would make less money that way but alot less hassle with distrobuting them to every one. AW will not be the only one for long i am sure. The ASUS i think will get a ddr5 upgrade in the future possibly

I don't know which crappy A.W. laptops you've owned But the quality of My M9750 and my M17 are top notch. Maybe I'm fortunate. And are you speaking of the many other manufacturers that use this same exact chassis or just A.W.?

Like the other brands, A.W. adds their own logo's and in their case, a lid mod. I'm curious if you don't like the chassis no matter the brand, or if it's just A.W that you don't like.

you pay super overpriced components and then things happen like my M9750 that had tape on the gpu and obviously a very serious thermal problem. they lock the bios on the m17 and you can only upgrade with your components if they approve. nice quality don't you think? but just check the AW subforum to a full list of rants.
Personally I don't like the AW design and their chassis but I dislike even more the ocz whitebook. fingerprint magnet >.< But I don't care about design. That's not the issue.

The 4870's of the ASUS are bigger and different from the ones that the ocz whitebook can use.

I've noticed that you have done a lot of ranting about A.W. in this and other posts.

-If you want to OC just use Setfsb, I did and it's stable over 3.5Ghz from a stock 3.06.

-You can upgrade whatever you want, A.W. limits this if you want to keep the warranty. I don't think this policy is any different than any other manufacturer. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but can you tell me what manufacturer lets you change whatever component you want and do whatever overclocking you want and still cover it under warranty??

I do read the posts at the A.W. forum. People come to ask questions when they are trying to make a purchase decision. It's full of enthusiasts about the A.W. product, overclockers, driver wizards, and generally a lot of really nice, well informed people. We find out what works and what doesn't. And of course it's also a magnet for people who have problems with their A.W. product. It's the definitive source for advise and information. So of course you're going to hear about problems there. Most of the time the problems are solved and sometimes you end up with a new post thanking A.W. support and the A.W. forum here at NBR. There will always be a small number of people who fell they didn't get a fair shake, but the vast majority are pleased with their A.W. including myself. I'm sorry you had a bad experience and now do not like A.W. All I can suggest is that you find a laptop that can satisfy your needs.

-If you think A.W. has poor quality, ugly appearance, believe they are overpriced, have unfair warranty policies, then spend your money elsewhere. A.W. has never forced anyone to buy their product.

    FACE!!!!!!

i also used Setfsb on my m17 to OC and i OC my gpus all on the AW bios( your thinking ulocking multipliers on the extremes) AW is rumored to have a ocing bios to come out on extreme's but its just rumors right now

dont get on our crap the m17 was fairly priced compared to other whitebooks( my only complaint was 200 for 1920 screen)

the m17 has been the least problem causeing notebook in the AW forum. I admit they are priced higher and there CS sucks sometimes but they still make notebooks and they are not immune to screw ups.

Any clarification on 4870s DDR5 and release date for the whitebook? Who is importing it into the US now that OZC is done? Will their be proper support for XP and Windows 7, including graphics card drivers, bios updates, etc.?

no one knows, and those who do aren't talking, but my speculation is:

    No official XP support
    Yes Windows 7 support
Driver and BIOS support will be sporadic, but will happen

    Ya know,
for me at least, I don't even need an unlocked bios. I'm able to get to over 3.5Ghz using Setfsb which as you know is also OCing the memory etc. I don't think I'd be able to push my proc. any more without adding voltage and getting very creative with the cooling. Not really something I want to do. Yet.

Plus I like that the fsb speeds go back to stock on reboot.

-if you overclock an M17 you will lose the warranty.

-you can't upgrade whatever you want without losing warranty. the policy is VERY different from other vendors (AW is NOT a manufacturer).
overclock is another business but even so there are manufacturers that allow it. examples, cybersystem, ahtec, webservinfor, killernotebooks. about upgrading, you can upgrade whatever you want without losing warranty if you didn't buy from AW.

-check other subforuns and compare the list of rants. and tell me which other vendor leaves tape on the gpu. they have serious problems really...

-why should someone buy an AW system which is overprice and has lot's of problems regarding upgrading, costumer support, warranty, overclocking, built quality? just because of the skullcap design?

-if AW have the exclusivity of some notebooks or components they are forcing the consumer to buy from them because no one can get the same product somewhere else.

    LOL, just about. :)

Sad thing is, even using SetFSB is, in theory, most likely voiding your warranty as youi're Overclocking your CPU. The good thing is your BIOS remains intact so your Vista OEM still works as advertised.

    Dude,
You've got serious issues. You love to slam A.W all you can. All the whining in the world isn't going to fix your bad experience with A.W. Might help you with all the other companies you want to sue though.

We get it already! You don't like A.W., you think they suck bla bla bla bla. Nobody is going to confuse you for someone who likes A.W.

That's fine, it's your opinion and you should get a product from one of the companies you listed above and contribute in a constructive way.

I can and do overclock my M17. I use Setfsb and this will not void the warranty as it's reset to stock on reboot. I can change my ram, and my HDD's. If I want another processor or upgrade Graphics cards I will go through A.W.

And you are wrong. Although there are a few exceptions, the vast majority of vendors/manufacturers won't let you change whatever you want without voiding the warranty. Are you seriousley trying to tell me that if you change your processor or graphics card that Acer, Asus, Dell, MSI, Sony, Toshiba etc......................will say "no problem" and still honor the warranty? I don't think so.

To be honest I've tired of this pointless exchange with you. The exchange is exactly the same every time-Ya don't like A.W.

Well, you can always flash your AW BIOS back to stock too if it needs some repair work (Unless the MB dies....man, that would be interesting). :)

SetFSB is the best way to void your warranty and they will never know....

I'm not giving my opinion, I'm stating facts that you want to ignore, everyone noticed that you are an AW fanboy. AW doesn't need some one to deffend them, they already have a very large team of lawyers. And I'm not attacking AW and I don't discuss facts.
SetFSB WILL void the warranty. Ask AW. If they known if you use setFSB you WILL lose your warranty. That is a fact.
AW is a vendor is not a manufacturer. I was very happy with my m9750 despite the overprice and all the thermal problems and such. I don't evaluate notebooks based on vendors. There's no real difference in hardware between the M17 and the OCZ whitebook. One is not better then the other. That is a fact.
And yes I can upgrade notebooks ram/cpu/hdd without losing warranty from about 99% of the vendors without losing any kind of warranty. Only AW does not allow it. In my company we do many upgrades for clients, we work with all the main brands toshiba, asus, msi, dell, clevo rebrands etc and we have to check the warranty policy for each model before we can tell the costumer if he can upgrade without losing the warranty. 99% of the times there's absolutely no problem. That is a fact.
If you want to upgrade an AW notebook you will have to go throught them which can be a very painful process and probably much more expensive. That is a fact.
I don't hate Dell or AW I really don't care about the brand if they haven't an exclusive. Personally I don't care about design. I would buy again an AW notebook if it was cheaper. And I bought an M17 recently for my sister. The lowest config AW makes is/was cheapest then other vendors (mainly because they are the only ones to offer a 1400x screen) and for the needs when she wants to upgrade the warranty will be gone already.
The only problem I and many ocz costumers might right now with AW is if they will have the exclusivity of the 4870's.

Of course I'm an A.W. fanboy. I really like the OCZ too and all the other brandings of this laptop. IMO support is best with A.W. vs. the other vendors.

And you think nobody noticed that you've made A.W your cross to bear?

Ask A.W. if using Setfsb would void my warranty? Cmon man, you just make me think of the movie Idiocracy.

Fact: I never disputed that A.W. is a vendor so what's the point.

Fact: I never said A.W. is better than the other vendors including OCZ. But now that you mention it, at least I've got an upgrade path.

You said "And yes I can upgrade notebooks ram/cpu/hdd without losing warranty from about 99% of the vendors without losing any kind of warranty."

Fact: that statement is total Bull****. You can change the CPU in 99%? I don't think so!!!!!!!

Anyway this is my last post with you, you're not going to draw me into the "Idiocracy" again!

sigh useing set FSB will void your warrenty but AW will not know

if you flash your bios then fry your mobo they cannot see you flashed it ...

AW is more expensive and does have issues but so do every other company

AW does not build the parts they put them together, so if something fails then they didn't do it. Unless its the TWO guys that got tape on his GPU's (from the same person)

    AW is overpriced

I do like AW so far

upgradeing is nice, change the ram and hard drive, the cpu and gpu upgrades do have to be sent in but you can do it on your own if you want to. Its smart busneiss to me, if i put a warrenty on the install you did with out seeing it or knowing where you got it i wouldn't trust it

most vendors, mainstream ones like hp dell etc dont let you OC or change cpus or gpus with out voiding a warrenty. Yea you can change it but it results in no warrenty.

only custom vendors offer that and its because the people who buy from them know what they are doing. High end laptops are built to upgrade.

the 1440 screen is fine i do have it and i think i will live. Although i do think it is stupid no to offer it as standard , and its just a way to get more money with the ram and screen.

CS is crappy but call roswell instead of the other butt nuggets

every company has serious problems, get over it. You really hate AW even i you do not think you do..... go to any subforum your gonna get rants about computers, no comapany is perfect and gonna suite every body

if you have a problem about the design take it up with ARima/ Flex
