I did not purchase my Compal HEL 80 with any significant amount of RAM (2x256) as I was planning to upgrade later. However, after looking at the powernotebooks.com accessories page where the RAM is located that I was looking at to check compatability, I saw things that were PowerPro specific.
I did get the Crown series due to the accidental damage warranty, and i was wondering if I can just buy any RAM i want, or if there is a specific manufactuer/ model that I have to get (and if so, what?).

You can use any memory you want provided it is compatible.

I'm actually kind of surprised you didn't buy the RAM upgrade from powernotebooks. Their prices are very reasonable on that.
I don't think you'll have a hard time finding compatible RAM though. If you're concerned, I'm sure their tech support will help you select one that will definitely work. -
Since you bought it with two 256mb modules you will have to replace them both so it really will not be compatability issue as long as you use DDR2 at speeds of 533 or 667. The RAM in my PowerPro HEL-80 was Corsair ValuSelect. I can get it a little bit cheaper at Newegg then from Powernotebooks.
