I'm thinking about getting a Compal HEL80, do any of you know if it is marketed by any of the big vendors (Dell, HP, ...) under a different name?

No, it is only available to Channel OEMs.

This is really good for the user because the Channel models are not stripped down to a price point like the major global brands. Compal is not restricted by the price, so they can build better quality, and that is what you will find in the Compal HEL80.

Nope. If it was, it would be likely we couldn't buy it as the HEL80 from other vendors due to contractual stuff (that's why we can't buy the Compal versions of current Dell and HP notebooks, as well).

it's marketed by several reputable vendors however, including NewEgg, PowerNotebooks, and XoticPC.

And those are just the most reputable. ;)

If you are looking for some commericial reassurance about the quality here are a few of the "elite" computer makers that use Compal Hel80:
    1) Voodoo PC Envy i:534
    2) WidowPC (cant remember which one)
    3) Velocity Micro

its a rebadged Compal Hel80, just costs 3 times as much as getting it at a specialized compal shop like powernotebooks.com. These companies here are considered to be much better than Dell or HP in overall service and performance. Hope that helps.

Add Oregon Stores to that list of "MIA Compal Displays".... Guy at the one closest to my home said that they sort of float that system around for events and the limited batches they get they try to use for promo stuff like "back to school" sales. He said to check the after Xmas sales though... *Shrug* I'd gladly show mine to someone in the portland area, but here in the NW it might be just as easy to go to a PC Club (glossy screen only).

They aren't in the Hudson Valley, NY stores either.
