Does anyone know how long the 6 cell battery last on the HGL30?
And where can I get a barebone one?

powernotebooks sells the batteries. Depending on what you're running, I'd say you'd get about 2-2.5 hours with the 6 cell.

I personally recommend you buy a pre-built system from a good reseller since it will give you a comprehensive warranty among other things. You don't save a whole lot by building your own.

I'll only be using it to take notes and go online when on battery. I'll also probably set brightness to lowest. I hope I can get at least 3 hours out of it.

I can save $417 if I build it myself compared to powernotebooks. My hp has lasted over 3 yrs without warranty work so I assume the hgl30 can as well.

Wow, that is a big savings. The average savings I see is $100-150. Your only real issues are going to be compatible parts and assembly, and multiple warranties. I'm guessing you already have a number of the components then?

The 9-cell really doesn't stick out that much though, only 3/4" and you hardly notice it. 3 hours may be pushing it with the 6-cell though, especially if you're going to be using Wi-fi.

    Good luck.

I'd recommend the 9-cell. It's not big at all when using it, and it adds much more battery life.
