Ok quick and silly question, can anyone tell me about the TV tuner that powernotebooks and xoticpc offer with their computers. I'm thinking (pretty sure) I'm going to order an IFL-90 this month and was thinking about getting the TV tuner with remote option, but I know nothing about it. Is it all internal, is the remote big or something that fits into a pci slot, how well does the tuner work, etc. etc. etc.

    Thanks!!

Something you might want to also look into (call powernotebooks or XoticPC) is if you can use the TV Tuner with the Robson upgrade, since they both probably share the same miniPCI slot.

Just FYI incase you wanted that upgrade too..

    (Which means it's internal ;) )

As to the quality, I'm not sure if it has changed much, but I've always owned a desktop with an All-in-Wonder card, and the stations are Good.. Nothing you would brag about (you might brag your PC has TV, but nothing amazing in the quality)...

Remember that TV is sent at something like 320x240 resolution, so on a high resolution screen your hardware scaling will be kicked in trying to make it look good. Does a pretty decent job on a 17" screen from about 2 feet away. The tuners are generally as good as a TV, but as I said, the output isn't always as good as a real TV since there is some scaling going on.

True I'll have to add that to the list of things to ask when I order my computer, I was kinda hoping *wink wink* that Justin or Donald would happen past this post and pop in for the answer :) heh.

    Thanks

Good point about the robson, I definately want the robson memory for whenever I switch to Vista, though you'd think either site would mention that choosing one upgrade voids the possibility of the other. Though it may have just been overlooked.

It depends on the notebook.. I know of a few systems that can't have both wireless network and robson at the same time because they only have 1 shared slot..

Is the signal HD? Because I know some of the external tv cards are HD. How do you think this'll compare.

I just got a confirmation from Donald @ Powernotebooks. The Compals are safe because they have two miniPCI slots, and the TV tuner / blue tooth have their own style connection.

Guess you just need to get someone to fess up how the quality is :)

wow thanks!!! Yeah, I wonder if anyone has done a review here on whatever particular TV tuner PNB and XoticPC ship their machines with, did Donald happen to mention anything about a brand or something more specific than "Internal TV Tuner" as listed on the ordering pages?

Nah, I didn't get any specifics on the tuner. Maybe when he hit's up the forum's in the morning he will be able to reply for ya.

If it makes you feel any better, my All-in-wonder is playing CATV (Watching Star Trek Voyager) on a 17" 1280x1024 screen and it looks fine :)

afaik, the robson/tv-tuner is the same minipci-e slot. There is another slot for the wireless card and then the bluetooth has it's own way of connecting. So total there is two minipci-e slots, and three possible minipci-e appliances (wireless, tuner, robson). Unless I'm missing something, oh and also the PM1 version of the VBI FL90 does not have this slot afaik, so no robson/internal tv-tuner there. I don't think they even have the ports placed on the sides either (like my EL80 too :)).

On another subject, i think the FL90 PM2.42 or so (the one with TPM and so forth, VBi) will/does have the extra minipci-e slot as I hear it supports robson so it generally should/must have one. That would mean finally internal tv-tuners on VBI. which would be like, cool. ;))

Just my few drops in the compal madness ocean ;))

    Cheers

Okay just to set the record straight the Intel FL90 does have a separate connector for the Bluetooth adapter and 3 mini PCI-e slots allowing for the Robertson turbo cache, the Intel wireless 3945 or 3965 with draft N, as well as the TV Tuner. the third slot is located above the keydoard under the dash panel on the left. So if you have someone telling you this notebook only has 2 PCI-e slots you should slap them in the head for not knowing what they are talking a bout the specs are posted on the intel site are people really to lazy to read something they are going to try and pass off as knowing something about?

    NHCTECK is correct.
I have installed my TurboCache below the Power Button tray.
Wifi has antenna connection as well as TV Tuner.
