Hey guys just now i was booting up my compal IFL90 when i accidentally pressed one of the 2 special keyboard buttons on the side I think it was the one with a wire icon (the one on the top, maybe for power limiting?) and my computer just turned off in middle of boot. I am not sure if i did this during the Phoenix start screen or not. Now when i turn my computer on the screen doesnt turn on (since its that shade of green) but i can hear my harddrive and stuff wirring along and my cd drive seems to work too. I dual Boot ubuntu and vista anyone have any ideas what happened here/how i can fix this? Thanks!

anyone? could this be a bios problem? Looking at other threads (which there are not a lot off) i might have to reset my bios? How would i go about doing this?

*Hmmm, this seems to be a tricky problem :(

Unplug it from the charger, remove the battery and press the power button, wait a bit and put the battery back and try to start it again.

sorry cant help you with that since i dont live in the US. i just took the pc back to my reseller and they took care of the problem for me.
you probably have some sort of receipt for your pc, you can start by locating it and finding out your reseller. after that google is your best friend.

well i called xotic pc but im not under warranty anymore. they said it could be the motherboard or gpu, and it would be about 300 for gpu and 500 for motherboard. do you guys think i should go with this or just get a new laptop?

You can get a new mxm-II GPU from ebay for less than $200 like another 8600m GT, a HD3650 or a 9600m GT; hell I could even send you my old 8600m GT but I'm out of town for the winter break... But if your motherboard is gone, you can get a new JFL92 barebone for a bit less than $500:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10008237 . You can then transplant your CPU,RAM and HDD and you should be set.

Wow ok thanks for all the help so far Ayle. Is there anyway to narrow down if its the motherboard or gpu thats at fault here?

Without another card at hand it's impossible to test if it's really the GPU or not, have you tried booting with only one stick of ram?

My IFL90 died this summer, exactly as you describe -- fans and disks spin up, nothing on the display, nor when I hooked up to an external monitor. Luckily, I was still under my 3 year warranty, and powernotebooks.com fixed it right up for me. I was told that they replaced both the gpu and motherboard.

What are you using (or would, if it were still working!) the laptop for, if not for gaming anymore? You might get better advice, if we knew...

oh i just program and do school work. now the only reason i need a dedicated nvidia card is a low end one just to run shader for xna. yeah i think the best bet is to buy a new computer... :(. maditude thanks though any ideas how your gpu and motherboard failed at same time? that might be the case here too since the computer is showing symptoms of both failing but i just didnt think that was statistically likely.

While exchanging email with Donald @ PNB, was told it was exceedingly rare for both to fail -- everything I've heard and read has been that these nVidia cards were just poorly made, so odds are good that this would be the only problem.

I'd call Xotic and ask them to take a look at it, if I were you. If it is indeed only the video card that needed replacing, that would be much cheaper than a whole new laptop.
