I was aware that the 8600M was failing for quite some time, so bought a 3650 a week ago, which is still in the post. The laptop was still working OK for web surfing until today, when I turned it on and got this.

Now, I wasn't very busy today, so I decided to take it apart in preparation for the new card. Everything seems to have gone well, but I've got a question.
Is there anything I need to remove from the old card and put onto the new card. It looks like this atm. If so, how should I go about doing it?

You can just follow this nice guide. You only have to remove parts from the old card if the new one does not come with spacers. Mine came with spacers, but most cards nowadays tend to come without them.

Thanks for that, I had a read but I'm still slightly confused.
When dremelling the 4 corners of the heatsink (See my photos below where I have circled them), do I just need to cut down the screw hole so it's level with the rest of the heatsink, or do I need to cut it down even more?

Also, I saw that there was modification required on this part (circled in green below)

How much do I need to cut it down? Has anyone got a more detailed photo - the one on mxm-upgrade isn't very clear.
    Thanks :)

First wait till the card arrives. If it has spacers you only need to dremel the part in your last picture. Just dremel away something and try if the card makes perfect contact, if not, dremel something more away.

The card has arrived. It didn't have anything installed on it, so I put the backplate thing from the 8600m onto it. Do I still need to do dremel the things in picture 1 and 2?

    Hello Woodpigeon4,

I have the same problem with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 512MB in my Compal FL90 laptop. With your successful replacement of the ATI Radeon HD3650 card, could you please advise me about choosing between a new HD3650 card and a new GeForce 8600M GT card?

By the way, where did you buy the HD 3650 card and for how much?

Should I buy the following 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT card? NEW! NVIDIA 256MB GeForce 8600M GT Video Card | eBay

I look forward to your response soon. Thank you!

The 8600M GT you linked to will not work - same for almost every other 8600M GT you find. The 8600M GT in your Compal is only replaceable with anotherone that came from a FL90.

As a matter of fact, practically no nVidia cards will work, so you are stuck with ATI.

I used this one, but now its price is almost doubled since the last 6 month.

Other options are linked in my tutorial.

    Good luck!

I had another post with that same thing. I only had that issue with the DDR3 version of the card. DDR2 worked fine. And it only did it if the display went off or if i closed the lid. It would open to those vertical colors.
