(see specs of system at bottom of page)
first of all vista ultimate runs absolutely fine!!
however.... i bought this as a gaming laptop and i think the shinyness of vista is wearing off and i want to play battlefield 2142 and battlefield 2 (at the mo they are completley incompatible and not working)
what issues am i going to face? am i right in thinking the robson memory chip thingy will need to be disabled?
anyway what do you think/suggest?
(is there any truth that a new service pack for vista is out soon? shall i wait?)

The Intel Turbo Memory will need to be disabled as it isn't compatible with XP (uses Vista tech).
If you're about to format anyway you might as well try the Vista SP beta. It will be out to the general public next week...
I can't comment on it though as I keep getting an error trying to install it here. -
XP 64-bit is really not well suited as a gaming OS, nor a choice platform for a laptop. That's my opinion, but most of the 64-bit system flaws come down to drivers, and laptops have enough problems getting their drivers kept up-to-date on a 32-bit platform.
I ran it for a year on a desktop as a 3D renderstation/gaming platform. Games had a lot of issues with it. -
If you have all the drivers, you can try. Otherwise don't even try.
-
The drivers for 64 XP-bit are not really good... Not much development there, people almost stopped making drivers for 64-bit XP because there's simply not much of a difference between 32 -> 64-bit in XP.
Stick with Vista 64-bit... you will not regret it when in a about a year the 64-bit are flooding the market with mature drivers -
I will stick up for x64 pro
I used it for 2 years with NO issues, gaming (Including 2142) and work stuff. However it is now outdated and driver support it limited, try and get it working with Vista x64 IMHO because I have ran it and played online :-s

hmmm. what to do.... what to do....
Obviously i have a legal copy of vista ult 64bit so i can always reinstall it.
so is the general census to stick with vista? -
I think you should stick to Vista, but that's MY opinion
It's a good thing to be future proof! -
I think you should stick at the Vista too, I have home prem x32 and Im playing BF2 pretty much, no compatibility problems. Check that you run the game in Compatibility mode with XP SP2 (right click-properties-compatibility) also run it as administrator and check the "disable visual themes". Im playing Project Reality viewing range on some maps up to 1km against 600m in normal BF2) with FPS of 60 (max with vSync) as infantry and in cars, 40 FPS flying.

just a random thought....
would virtual pc be an option? i havent used it in a long time, would it work? -
just tried it with virtual pc and its doing the same thing
sob

What is it doing that is making you go this far? Describe the EXACT problem.
-
When i try to boot up battlefield 2142 it says "please insert original cd" although it is in the drive and an original?
this is a common problem with vista 64 -
Is it ? I've never had anything like that before...

And you have set the shortcut to run the game as Administrator all the time?
-
sorry for taking a long time to reply, yes i have! i have also tried disabling UAC or whatever it is, anyone else run this succesfully on same/similar system?
-
And you run it in compatibility with XP? Right click->properties->compatibility
select xp sp2
disable visual effects
run as administrator
Im running BF2 on vista premium x32 with no problems
Considering Vista Ultimate 64bit to XP Pro 64bit Downgrade, what do you think?
