So I started a hoax in the Alienware section of a special edition dubbed the Alienware M17 "Code Red" edition. Got some interesting responsese, but the gig is up now. As I already mentioned, I just swapped the lid with that of a painted M9700 lid and here is what it looks like now:

In terms of taking things apart, swapping, and putting it back together, it was easier than imagined, but also longer than imagined. Between the Whitebook lid and the M9700/M9750 lids (the designs are essentially the same in and out), the inverter cable connectivity are the same. This means that the cable connector on the LCD inverters are the same although the inverters themselves are different. Because of this, the camera connectivity is also the same (even though the Whitebook uses a 2.0MP camera and the M97xx 1.3MP camera). The only difference is that the inverter cable of the M9700/M9750 has an extra conectivity for the Alienhead, while the Whitebook doesn't (which is weird seeing that it also has a light up figure at the back of the lid). Nonetheless, swapping the cables allowed the LCD from the whitebook to work with the M97xx lid. The wireless antennas were also different, but it was easy being that the "antennas" are really just tape and a sticky box that can be pasted on any part of the M97xx lid.
So in short, M97xx lids are compatible with the Whitebook and vice versa pretty much. When I get back home, I'll provide pictures of the whitebook lid and the M97xx lid to show you the differences and possibly how to mimic what I did, for those who are interested.

Sorry, but I have to say this-It is ugly!Change it back!
-
It's a cool idea, but I agree, the colors just don't seem to go well together.
-
im for sure not fond of the colors but i myself happen to kinda like the lid but i def dont like the red lid with the whole rest of the notebook being black
-
Trust me guys, it look better in person. I think it's the camera flash that makes it too bright. I initially wanted to make it gloss black (which most I think would have preferred over this), but wanted to try something different.
-
I do like the lid design itself and the concept of changing the lid. I just don't think, from the pictures, that the colors really mesh.
-
Love the lid.. drop the color to a bright alien green.

ArmageddonAsh Mangekyo Sharingan
thats really ugly - the colours dont go - if you are going to have the red lid you should paint the rest of the laptop the same colour
the way it the lid is really nice and i like the colour, but red and black dont go -
if that was a red & black porch/ferrari/lambo... you know you would be loving it!!
go ahead...you know that color is growing on you..
me..i would have to have the lid painted blue...nothing personal...lol -
I was thinking, baby puke green would be appropriate. maybe splatter painted across the current Martian Red..or whatever it was called. Either way.. I'd rock the Red
-
Paint the lid the green of zombie flesh and the ridges the color of bone. In between the ridges you can pain in some torn flesh with a couple of organs peeking through.
-
The Alienware section had some fun with the color. Here's my system photoshopped (courtesy of napbree) to
green:

pink:

I'd like to see one in Midnight blue or pearl white. Those where the other major options I entertained against the current color...
Edit: I might remove my palmrest today to get it painted. Any suggestions for color scheme? -
I personally like the original lid of the whitebook.
However, if you can color the lid to black. it will look just perfect -
the green looks sweet.
-
Or you can paint it a pasty skin tone and draw an outie belly button in the lower center so that it looks like an anorexic chick's stomach.
-
^^^^^^ lol...
-
LOL... (10 chars long)
-
I like it.
-
Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
i think its nice
honk honk -
Out of curiosity did you ever manage to swap the palm rest from the M9750 to the Whitebook?
-
Actually, no I haven't because I found another method to restyle my palmrest. But I'll definitely have to do it one of these days when I'm motivated to.
-
Do you think it would have fit?
If so could probably grab this and either paint or get an aluminum job on the top to match. -
i was told by someone that yes it fits fine. i have not done it so i can not confirm that but he is a repair tech and said someone brought him one of these ocz's and he swapped out the lid and palmrest for ones he got off ebay (blue ones)
-
Thanks much.

-
Well I've noticed a problem...the M97xx palm rest doesn't have a fingerprint reader.
-
-
-
yeah i would not use it either so i dont care personally
-
You can get some more of the lids from this place on ebay:
http://search.stores.ebay.com/Cyber...inityQQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsaselZ25697315QQsofpZ0 -
yeah but all those are used system pulls. id want new if i was buying
-
Me too, I really like that look for some reason, its just appealing.
-
Ive been looking at gmask as an option.
Ive always hated skin stickers because they dont cover the whole lid but gmask wraps around the edges and has a much better look.
Plus it's another excuse to go to Vegas. Don't need another excuse but it don't hurt none neither. -
i chime im getting a green m9700 lid
-
That's pretty cool ichime.
I just got another lid so I can do some custom paint without damaging the factory lid. Should be here tomorrow. Haven't decided what color yet, pro. something subtle. -
hot pink

The supposedly m9700 lid I bought from here:
http://search.stores.ebay.com/Cyberi...697315QQsofpZ0
is actually off of a M9750 or a M17. It has the nice rubberized finish and it's absolutely perfect.
The company shipped it only hours after I ordered it. If you need A.W. parts, I suggest you look at what at what they have at the above link. -
